I absolutely adore this book in the series. While I enjoyed the first installment in the Jordan series, I do believe you find this one more exceptional than the last.

I mean, who doesn't want to read about a reformed rake and a marriage of convenience. Love those tropes, and if you do too, you'll want to read this one as well.

Noah Jordan, Marquess of Woodbury, longs for the excitement he once had as a spy for the War Department. But he understands that he must also settle down and begin a family to pass along the title. When his former boss comes to him with one last assignment, Noah jumps on the chance for adventure. The assignment takes him to the family estate in Woodbury where a man is suspected of killing his last wife. There, he meets Marion Hawthorn, an enchanting woman to whom he is instantly attracted. As he escorts her home, Noah learns the Marion and her father are staying with the very man whom Noah has been sent to investigate. And that the suspected wife-killer is looking to replace his dead wife with Marion!

Marion is spunky and impulsive, but utterly charming. And despite her rocky relationship with her overbearing father, she seems genuinely confused about why he wants to harm her and would marry her off to Mr. Lewis. She sees the good in everyone, even when they don't really deserve it. And yet, she's sensible enough to know when she needs to get out of a dangerous situation, even if her plan seems a bit reckless and impulsive.

Noah is assertive and noble - he feels an intense desire to protect Marion from her scheming father and murderous clutches of Mr. Lewis. It was very entertaining the watch him battle his emotions regarding Marion and still try to solve the murder mystery surrounding Mr. Lewis' late wife because what we have learned about Noah thus far (in The Jordans Book 1 and here in Book 2) is that he is a notorious and unapologetic rake. And there is nothing so sensual and sweet as a "reformed" rake.

I think one of the things I liked most about this book is that Noah and Marion's love developed from friendship first. Although they were both attracted to each other almost from their first meeting, they begin as friends before becoming lovers. And watching them try to solve the mystery of Mrs. Lewis' death was a lot of fun. Noah and Marion work well together as they gather information and from this partnership grows a deep love and loyalty.

A very sweet romance wrapped in a Gothic package. Very enjoyable!
