Overview

Book One in the Ghosts of Golden series.

Coronado Prep student Maria Ochoa, 16, is near death after crashing her car on an isolated stretch of New Mexico Highway 14 during a blizzard. When the only person to show up to help her is a teen gangbanger named Demetrio Vigil, Maria fears she’s doomed, until the young man manages, miraculously, to heal her nearly fatal wounds with nothing but the warm energy radiating from his hands. Maria is grateful for the help, and seeks to thank Demetrio by returning to the tiny ghost town of Golden, where he said he lives, to find him and give him a gift. What she discovers out about Demetrio along the way, however, not only defies logic and belief, but puts Maria’s very life in terrible danger. Filled with action, suspense, mystery and romance, this is a modern ghost story for all ages.

Alisa Valdes has been hit-or-miss with me--I liked the "Dirty Girls" books, but hated many of the characters (if that makes sense). I read an article about Valdes' creative struggles, so I wandered over to her website and saw that this was free and very different from her other books. I'm so very glad I read this one. It's very difficult to review without giving too much away, but I'll just say that Valdes does a good job of mixing romance, humor, class commentary, and the supernatural in "The Temptation of Demetrio Vigil." The title character is fascinating, warm, and mysterious. It is easy to see Maria's attraction to him, despite her initial misgivings, social pressure, and worrisome information about Demetrio's past. However, once again, the characterization is the weak point. The best characters are Demetrio himself and Kristen, Maria's best friend. Maria herself can be somewhat of a cypher; she seems to exist as a pretty girl that things happen to. Her family is almost cartoonishly awful--although I did laugh at her step-mother's third-person dieting references. There is a point in the book where her mother does something terrible to her for unforgivable reasons, and while Maria is saddened at this treatment, it doesn't seem to matter to her as much as her new romance does. The bad guys are just as puzzling; although one of them has suffered greatly and has been twisted by his devastating life, the other one seems to have no real reason for being that evil. Even so, the supernatural themes, the societal commentary, and the sweet romance make up for the underwritten characters.
