The Terror is the Flaming Lips' first album of wholly self-penned material since 2009's expansive and experimental Embryonic. The intervening four years saw the Oklahoma act take a few lighthearted diversions, overseeing cover projects in tribute to both Pink Floyd and King Crimson as well as issuing a 2012 album of collaborations under the title The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. Although The Terror -- their 13th studio album proper since 1986 -- takes a comparatively darker path, it was produced by their longtime friend and cohort, Dave Fridmann.
