Overview

Recognized as one of the leading references on the spine, this comprehensive two-volume text brings together experts from around the world to discuss the full scope of spinal surgery. This edition has many new contributors, including both neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons, and presents a broad survey of all aspects of spinal surgery, including degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, fractures, infections, and more.

Chapters describe current surgical techniques in detail and discuss indications, preoperative and postoperative care, and possible complications. More than 3,500 illustrations complement the text, and bulleted points, tables, and algorithms are used extensively throughout.

A companion Website with the fully searchable text and procedural video is included with the two-volume text.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Samuel J. Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This significant update of a textbook on spinal surgery represents a massive undertaking, reflecting the tremendous growth in the field since the second edition was published 13 years ago and incorporating the neurosurgical aspects of spinal surgery.
Purpose: The purpose is to cover all important etiologies (deformity, degenerative, traumatic, and neoplastic) of pediatric and adult spinal surgery, as well as pathologies from the skull to the sacrum and their diagnosis and treatment.
Audience: It is written for medical students, physical therapists and physiatrists who are particularly interested in the study of spinal pathology and surgical treatment, orthopedic and neurosurgery residents and fellows, and practicing orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. Dr. Bridwell is a professor of orthopedic surgery as well as neurosurgery, and Dr. DeWald is one of the premier educators of spine surgeons who are now practicing worldwide.
Features: The book addresses all principles and techniques of modern spine surgery. The chapters are detailed, yet to the point. Illustrations are excellent and references are appropriate. This third edition accommodates new outcomes, technology, and clinical research. The photographs, tables, and radiographic reprints are excellent.
Assessment: This is an outstanding treatise that deserves to be in every orthopedic surgical library. Its most outstanding feature is that the chapters have been peer-reviewed. Chapters were reviewed by an associate and a senior editor, and most were returned to the author(s) for revision before submission to the publisher. For such a huge book, it doesn't get any better than that. This is a significant update of the premier publication of this kind in the field.
