Aristophanes (c.446 BC - c.386 BC) was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his approximately forty plays survive, providing modern understanding of the Old Comedy genre. Little is known of his personal life.

Produced the same year as LYSISTRATA, THE THESMOPHORIAZUSAE is considered one of the most brilliant of Aristophanes' extant plays. The play focuses on the role of women in a male-dominated society, as well as poking fun at several contemporary Athenian poets.
