The Thing - A young Boy's Journey with Asperger Syndrome

The Thing is a simple story poetically told by a loving mother of a 7 year old boy with High Functioning Aspergers. Written to fill the hole she had found in this very niche market, her book doesn't teach you how to change your child. It doesn't teach the child the nature of their condition and how to survive or mask it. It isn't about fixing anything at all...merely supporting your child to accept it and in some way embrace it as an amazing and indelible part of who they are.

With parent/carer notes and suggestions for classroom activities, this book is not simply for children on the Autistic spectrum. It is a sensitive and accessible route to opening discussion with children across mainstream and specialist settings about the nature of diversity and acceptance.

About the Author

Rachel is a self employed consultant in the field of Leadership Development, Emotional Intelligence and Resilience - teaching adults how to be more effective in the workplace and at home. She holds a BsC Honours in Psychology from Royal Holloway University of London and completed her dissertation in Autism around Theory of Mind. Her son is 7 and was diagnosed in January 2017 with High Functioning Autism (Aspergers Syndrome). She has been home schooling him for the last six months due to exclusions from two mainstream primary schools due to inappropriate social behaviour. He has recently started school at a specialist independent school for Autism.

Zeke Clough is an illustrator based in Todmorden, best known...so far...for his distinctive sleeve artwork for electronic musicians such as Shackleton and Ekoplekz. His partner of eight years has 14 year old autistic twins who go to a specialist communication school. Zeke's love of comic strips and drawing has proved to be an effective way to communicate with the boys. When they were younger their favourite toys were included in the comics - they either give advice or learned along with the boys. Many a meltdown or hazardous situation was circumvented by a quickly drawn explanatory comic strip! Zeke also works for a mental health charity supporting school children to develop an understanding of the importance of good mental health and providing them with a language to discuss these issues. His illustrations also support his work with refugees/asylum seekers and adults with mental health difficulties.
