The Third

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Fred Thomas
Atlanta crunk rockers Family Force 5 expand on the party they started on 2011's III with Third. This somewhat confusing collection cherrypicks some of the better tracks from the group's third album of bombastic rap/pop/metal, including the would-be dance craze jam "Wobble," the poor man's lament "Paycheck," and the completely over the top pop anthem "Can You Feel It," among others. New additions to the set list include unreleased tracks like the party-minded "Zombie" and a guest appearance from rapper Lecrae on the new single "Cray Button." Atlanta crunk rockers Family Force 5 expand on the party they started on 2011's III with Third. This somewhat confusing collection cherrypicks some of the better tracks from the group's third album of bombastic rap/pop/metal, including the would-be dance craze jam "Wobble," the poor man's lament "Paycheck," and the completely over the top pop anthem "Can You Feel It," among others. New additions to the set list include unreleased tracks like the party-minded "Zombie" and a guest appearance from rapper Lecrae on the new single "Cray Button." Family Force 5 have always operated in vaguely Christian circles, and Third continues the ambiguity of their message. Almost no overt references to faith or Christianity come across, with the closest semblance of something similar to Christian rock coming in the more soul-searching final tracks "Superhero" and "Not Alone." Otherwise, the absence of profanity, sexual innuendo, and general nastiness are the only things separating the booming, hard-edged pop tracks of Third from your run-of-the-mill crunk pop radio artist. A PG version of the usually hedonistic sound doesn't make the music more interesting, but there's something refreshing about the group's pun-laden lyrics and energized, wholesome approach to what usually comes from a much sleazier place.
