Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Although the Third Planet doesn't lay claim to the entire globe, the five-member group does embrace native influences from Italy to India, from Algeria to Kurdistan. Facilitator of this musical technostew is Florentine keyboardist Maurizio Dami. Nazar, in exile from Kurdistan, plays the stringed saaz and adds powerful Middle Eastern vocals. Smail Kouider Aissa, from Algeria, performs on keyboards and sings the vibrant street music of his homeland. On tabla and other ethnic percussion are Rashmi V.
Bhatt from India and Paolo Casu from Florence. An album like this -- danceable techno grooves overlaid with ethnic voices and instruments -- could be constructed simply from samples, but this one is a true artistic collaboration. The title track buoyantly floats on a dance groove, while the two vocalists trade melodic lines like trapeze artists over a Middle Eastern bazaar. "Mektoub" showcases the hand drumming of Paolo Casu and the blistering sounds of Nazar's saaz, riding on a steady bass beat and atmospheric paisley keyboard work. The tabla steps to the center for "Sulimani," while "Raghupati" features a tinny-sounding radio broadcast and rhapsodic devotional singing. The album which could use lyrics, translations, and more complete credit notes ends with three tracks from an augmented group, Kurdistani. The most extraordinary of them, "Besauari" combines a jaunty percussion track, Nazar's energetic vocals, and a string accompaniment as peaceful as an oasis morning. Each piece has layers of intricate touches, sometimes electronically swirled and echoed, and each listen unlocks more and more musical treasures.
