The Thorn Key: Fairy Tales in Verse
A longtime scholar of fairy tales, Jeana Jorgensen's poetry is as evocative as her prose. She weaves words into stunning tapestries of thought and feeling, imagining how abused princesses escape their captors and why mermaids come to shore. An aging Snow White reimagines her relationship with her stepmother, while a young woman under a silence spell treats it as a blessing rather than a curse. Retelling classic fairy tales with a feminist slant, along with queer and polyamorous characters, the poems in The Thorn Key offer snapshots of trauma and healing, resilience and transformation.

About the Author

Jeana Jorgensen earned her PhD in folklore from Indiana University. She researches gender and sexuality in fairy tales and fairy-tale retellings, folk narrative more generally, body art, dance, sex education, disability, and feminist/queer theory. While she spends most of her time teaching college courses at Butler University and publishing her research, she also writes fiction and poetry. Her poetry has appeared in Strange Horizons, Liminality, The Orange & Bee, and Glittership, among other publications. She is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association and a member of the editorial team of Marvels & Tales: Journal of Fairy-Tale Studies. Her poem “The Witch’s House” was nominated for the 2018 Rhysling Award, and her short dystopian story about reproductive rights, “The book you find when you really can’t afford to get pregnant,” won the Spider Road Press Feminist Flash Fiction Award of 2018. She also teaches dance, nurtures her sourdough starter, and knits.
