Overview

Surrender the Dark, the first novel in the Three Musketeers series by Donna Kauffman, offers the tantalizing story of a hardened, highly trained operative—and the woman who must save him.

They call themselves the Three Musketeers: three lifelong friends, men who will put it all on the line in the name of honor and loyalty. Jarrett McCullough values those bonds as seriously as he values his job heading a covert group of operatives skilled in handling sensitive international information. But his current mission has suddenly gone very wrong—and he finds himself wounded and near death in the last place he ever expected to be.

Rae Gannon is stunned to find her ex-boss bleeding from a gunshot wound, mere paces from her front door. It has been two years since her move to the remote Blue Ridge Mountains, where she tried to erase the memories and the pain she suffered from having been part of McCullough’s team. Yet as Rae tends to Jarrett’s battered body she realizes that the air between them is still sizzling with a slow-burning need. But this time there are more than just hearts at stake. The mission that almost got Jarrett killed threatens to put Rae back in harm’s way. And if they surrender to their desires, it may cost them their lives.

Surrender the Dark was so much more than I expected. I expected

Surrender the Dark was so much more than I expected. I expected it to be fun and a little intense. It was a lot intense and a little fun. Jarrett, the hero has closed himself off from feeling any emotions and from experiencing regular life. He lives for his job and his company. He doesn’t have a life at all other than that. He has 2 best friends that get together about once a year and that’s it.
Rae, a former courier for Jarrett’s company has dealt with a lot as well. Her mother died when she was four. She had no idea who her father was, so she bounced through the foster system. Once in college she meets with Jarrett in her counselor’s office and knows that this is the job for her. She will be serving her country by delivering classified documents into war torn countries. When she is captured and held captive, Jarrett fears the worse, that she was compromised and left her there thinking she was a traitor. When she escapes and comes to headquarters, she feels betrayed. Everyone thought she sold out, when she was the one set up.

Rae escapes and heals in her mountain home. She doesn’t do relationships (friends or otherwise). I love how these two were constantly at battle with their inner selves. They wanted each other but didn’t want to want any one. This is a very moving story. I will be reading the next book in the series to see if the author can keep this level of writing up. It was truly an amazingly written and thought out book. I truly loved it.

    Loveswept Re-Issue. Yum!

Thanks to the publisher, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley for the chance to read this!

This is the first book in the romantic suspense series, The Three Musketeers, by Donna Kauffman: Surrender the Dark is a re-issue of a Loveswept Classic Romance #760 originally published 10/95.

Intelligence courier Jarrett is injured and on the run from trouble. Unconsciously, he heads straight toward Rae’s, an ex-courier, house. This hot fast paced novel will keep you on your toes as they find forgiveness and love. I am a huge fan of romantic suspense so when I came across these books by Ms. Kauffman; I knew I had to read them. I enjoyed this book -- the dialogue was witty, the characters are well rounded, and the story pace kept me intrigued. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, I highly recommend this series. This is a well-balanced story with equal parts romance and suspense. .

    #3 (Dane Colbourne’s story) – Midnight Heat

Stepped to the side at the last moment, letting ripplepaw barrel past her. Never blatantly charge an opponent. All it does is give them an opening to attack you while youre rushing past them or off balance afterwards.

    My Review:

I like emotional books and this is one of the best that I've read in a while.

Two years ago, Rae fled to the mountains, a broken woman. The man ultimately responsible for that was Jarrett, who'd been her boss when she'd gone in on a mission that went very wrong. Captured and tortured for months, when she came back, she was greeted with suspicion from Jarrett and JMI. The capture didn't break her, the suspicion did. She quit and escaped to her mountain hideaway where she stays alone. An orphan from the age of four, JMI had become her life and her family. The betrayal of that broke her heart.

Jarrett has an awful job constantly putting his operatives at risk. He's had to distance himself, knowing that what he does is better for the good of the most rather than the life of the one. It's cost him. He doesn't realize how much until he wakes up half-dead at Rae's mountain cabin. She found him in the woods, shot and dying and saved him. Now he needs her help, but first he has to recover some of his strength. As he slowly begins to realize what he's done to this woman, his heart and soul slowly begin to thaw. Like I said...E.MO.TION.AL.

This guy is totally an alpha...used to be the tough guy in charge, no questions, no weakness. When he first awakens at Rae's, he's almost dead and as weak as he can be. Suddenly he's vulnerable with the one person who could be his weakness...and ultimately becomes his strength to live a real life. It was just gorgeously written. Watching Jarrett's transformation was really incredible. He finds his heart and then has to shutter it again to send Rae into a dangerous situation. Beautiful writing with such evocative emotion. I truly love it.

Here's a great example of one of the heart-wrenching quotes and why I loved this book so much:

    She was so damn strong.

And he'd never felt weaker. He wanted desperately to climb back into the safe, emotionless void he'd inhapbited for more years than he could remember. He craved the blessed relief of not allowing himself to feel, or want, or need.

She wasn't going to let him.

He looked at her and ached. Ached in places he didn't know had feelings.

This is the first in a trilogy about three friends. We get to see the friends briefly in this book, but not enough to tell exactly what there stories are going to be like. If they are half as good as this one, I will be happy!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
