Overview

There's something about the resounding ring of the tenor voice that can send a surge of electricity running down your spine. For centuries now, opera composers have cast tenors as lovers and heroes, relying on these singers to communicate the passion and courage of the characters they play. And of course, the greater the tenor, the better his ability to inspire. So, with three of the world's greatest tenors joining their voices in the excitement of a live concert, the phenomenal chart-topping success of this recording shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Singing everything from grand opera to Broadway to Neapolitan popular songs, Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras are having a blast -- and their excitement is infectious. Purists may scoff, but millions of fans keep shouting "Encore!"

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Eddins
The Three Tenors in Concert, recorded live in Rome in 1990, holds the distinction in the Guinness Book of World Records (in 2010) of being the best-selling classical album of all time. The concert, held at the Baths of Caracella, took place July 7, 1990, just before the opening of the Soccer World Cup Final. This concert and album, which initiated the Three Tenors phenomenon, had the original purpose of raising funds for the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation and boosting the career of Carreras, who had only recently recovered from the disease. Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and Carreras take turns singing opera arias, Broadway hits, and traditional Neapolitan songs, but on several tracks, the three tenors sing together. Zubin Mehta accompanies the singers, leading the orchestras of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
