The Toady And Dr Miracle: Ready-To-Read Level 2

Overview

A young boy outwits a traveling medicine man in this funny tale of mayhem set in the American West. "I need myself a toady", Dr. Miracle tells Luther, who's just minding his own business. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Young Luther was not known for his brainpower. But it was, in fact, his quick thinking that saved the people from losing their money to the wily Dr. Miracle and his fake potions. Ms. Christian has written a historical novel that's long on humor, learning, and wisdom; and short on difficult vocabulary, complex sentence structure, and confusion. With bright, expressive illustrations, it's a happy package-just right for readers who are ready to forge ahead on their own. "Ready-to-Read" Level 2. 1997 (orig.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4In this jaunty tale for beginning readers, first published in 1985 (Macmillan; o.p.), Luther is at first tricked into assisting Dr. Miracle, a phony medicine man; but later, the youngster succeeds in foiling the would-be fraud. Children will empathize with the boy, tempted to earn easy money, who slowly figures out the truth and what he should do. Christian's folksy telling takes the time to evoke a frontier setting and concludes in a nicely rounded fashion. Jenny's illustrations for this new edition, though, are clumsy and undistinguished. Though more colorful than the original pictures by Ib Ohlsson, they are not as successful at matching the humor or the lively goings-on of the text. If your library owns the original, skip this version. If not, this marginal edition still warrants consideration for Christian's clever, accessible story.Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
