Overview

Everything a parent needs to know about the all-important toddler years.

At the onset of the toddler years parents get some rude surprises, no matter who well prepared they are. Seemingly overnight a previously easy baby turns into a mobile, opinionated individual already testing adults and making independent decisions. Written by a leading pediatric expert, The Toddler Care Book provides age-appropriate strategies to help parents deal with the toddler years.

This full-color, comprehensive resource features a wealth of reliable information presented in friendly, easy-to-understand ways that a parent will appreciate. Including advice on healthy sleep habits, healthy eating and good nutrition, developmental milestones of physical and emotional behavior and safety issues for home, car, school bus and playground, this book is the go-to source for information on toddler issues.

In addition, there is a special chapter on first aid and caring for a sick youngster, featuring conditions ranging from fever and colds to impetigo and lice to urinary tract infections and flat feet. Without question, this is the most complete book available on new developments in toddler care.

The Hospital for Sick Children is one of the foremost children's hospitals in the world, providing specialized care for infants, toddlers and children up to 18 years of age.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Chief of pediatric medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, Friedman has enlisted as contributors eight members of the hospital's pediatric faculty; between them the authors are the parents of 20 children under the age of nine. Similar in style and format to The Baby Care Book (written with the late Norman Saunders), the book covers growth and development, behavior, nutrition, sleep, safety, medical issues and “everything in between.” The text opens with concerns specific to young toddlers (age 12 to 24 months) such as teething and choosing a caregiver; proceeds to topics relating to older toddlers (age two to three years), including temper tantrums and welcoming a new sibling; and concludes with preschoolers (four- and five-year-olds), addressing such issues as starting school and discipline. Healthy eating habits, toilet training, first aid and caring for a sick toddler are also covered, along with detailed developmental milestone and growth charts as well as a helpful guide to vaccinations (including the whys and wherefores). Frequently Asked Questions and sections that explore the father's role are interwoven, along with intermittent entries called “Sam's Diary,” which track the developmental progress of Friedman's son. Parents of toddlers will readily warm up to Friedman's friendly tone as he and his parent-colleagues examine all things toddler in one accessible volume. 250 color photos. (Oct.)
