Overview

In this exciting second volume of Howard Carter's account of the discovery of Tutankhamun, he covers the seasons during which they dismantled the golden shrines surrounding Tutankhamun's sarcophagus. Then he takes you through the tense but thrilling moments when they opened the three coffins and became the first men to gaze upon the pharaoh's face in more than 3,000 years.

With his characteristic sensitivity and enthusiasm, Carter draws you into his passion for his subject. Under great pressure to make the tomb available to tourists (even before it was completely cleared), he tells us how in one 75-day period, over 12,000 visitors were allowed in. That means about 20 visitors per hour, every hour, for a ten-hour day, six days per week.

Carter and his colleagues explain the difficulties in preserving some of the very fragile artifacts that had lain for millennia in the hot and sometimes humid tomb. The world owes them a great debt for the time and care they took despite the demands on them.

For the first time, this three-volume set is available for eReaders and smartphones.
