For younger statistics lovers, here is the newly-revised and expanded competition to The Guinness Book of World Records. The gimmick, of course, is presenting more than one stat. Athletes will enjoy the sports listings, and those more media conscious the music and stage and screen offerings. The really interesting stuff, though, comes under headings such as "Transport Disasters." It is fascinating to see the destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588—with an estimated 4000 deaths—as only fifth among the worst marine disasters in recorded history. The worst? A German liner filled with refugees torpedoed off Gdansk in 1945 with an estimated 7800 deaths. Paging through this book is seductive—and time-consuming, too! The glossy pages are adorned with eye-popping photos; one of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the world's second-tallest building, is a case in point. The compilation is probably a must buy for middle-school libraries, and a good gift for reluctant male adolescent readers as well. 2005, DK Publishing, Ages 10 up.
