Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
It isn't often that a book with "total" in its title delivers, but this is one of the exceptions. Burrows is a prolific writer on all things guitar (e.g., K.I.S.S. Guide to Playing Guitar), and his latest covers everything. Part 1, on playing, contains 20 lessons, each introducing new ideas and techniques and fully illustrated with color photos. Chords, scales, timing, and rhythm are a few of the topic covered. In Part 2, there is a complete chord dictionary with notation and fingering charts. Part 3 discusses amplifying the guitar (whether acoustic or electric) and, finally, recording and performing. Sprinkled throughout the text are brief biographical portraits of great players with details of their equipment and a discography of their key recordings. This is an absolutely first-rate production, with glossy paper stock, full-color photos and illustrations throughout, and a quality binding. In all, a lot of book for the price; highly recommended for public libraries.-Eric C. Shoaf, Brown Univ. Lib., Providence Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
From Barnes & Noble

Guitar guru Terry Burrows, whose bestselling tutorials have been translated into six languages, steers beginners through a daunting maze of equipment, theory, and techniques, providing basic information in 20 easy-to-follow, self-contained lessons generously illustrated with photographs and diagrams.

In addition to these lessons, the book also provides a 36-page chord dictionary; information on various styles from classical and blues to country, rock, and jazz; a brief history of the guitar and profiles on pioneer players, including Chet Atkins, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and Charlie Christian; and a concluding section on performing and recording your own music. 8 1/2" x 11". Color photos and illustrations.

Good book, but numerous factual errors

This is a good book from the standpoint of organization, and what it intends to communicate. However, the gross number of factual errors (call them typos or whatever you please) such as incorrect chord diagrams, incorrect notes in scale descriptions, mis-matched staff and tabbed notes, etc. are distracting, and would be very misleading to a beginning player, perhaps to the point of retarding progress. Unfortunately, the proof-reading of this text was sorely lacking. It would be worthwhile to correct these errors and release a revised edition.

    A must have

I found 'Total Guitar' to be an excellent overview of the guitar and its history. It is a must have if you cannot afford some costly music lessons. I read through each lesson dozens of times picking up new information each time. I definatley recommend purchasing this book if you are interested in the theory and development of playing the guitar. p.s typos are a motha f**ka

    The typos are killer

The book could have been great, oh so close¿ but I encountered serious typos in the SCALES section that took a lot of time to figure out that they were in fact typos and not me being a total knucklehead. It's always the details, eh?

    Good All-Around Reference Book

This book contains a good history of the guitar as an instrument and its place in modern music and several biographies of innovators, players, and designers of the instrument. The book also includes a section on general musical theory, brief descriptions and samples of some common playing styles. Most notably, the book contains an extensive chord dictionary. If you don't mind a few grammar errors and out-of-place punctuation, this is still a bargain at under $20.

    Awesome

This book as an excellent book for getting to know the guitar from a beginners point of view. Great history, great introductions to music theory as it applies to the guitar, and the basic styles.

    The sweetness of Total Guitar

Sup This book kicked major a$$ me and my step brother loved it we are just getting into guitars and we are tryin to start our own band with him switchin' from bass to electric and me from lead vocals, to electric. Anyway this book helped us to learn about our guitars. Which we kinda needed. So if anybody is tryin' to learn about guitars and how to use them, take care of them, or flat out learn guitar this is da book.
