Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Larnette Snow
In this reissue of Caldecott Honor illustrator Paul Galdone's 1971 classic folk tale the country mouse finds that he prefers his country life to that of his friend's in His Majesty's Court. The "pomp and elegance" and the noise from the dog, the cat and servants of the court are too much for the country mouse. Declining an invitation to spend the night, he quickly heads to the "peace and quiet" of his country home. Not meaning to sound blasphemous but why has this forty-year-old book been reissued? Because this is a classic fable and this is a classic retelling. The newest version of the story that comes to mind is by illustrator Jan Brett from 1994. This tale of two friends can be used for many curriculum topics: community, rural/urban, comparing/contrasting. The appealing cover, story and price of this reissue will make it popular with librarians, classroom teachers, and children. Reviewer: Larnette Snow
