Mary could be a modern-day young woman with her determination, intelligence, and strong will. The Traitor In The Tunnel finds Mary on a mission to stop a petty thief at Buckingham Palace, but the plot quickly thickens when Mary finds herself having to fight off the affections of the Prince of Wales, as well as having to find out the true identity of an accused killer. As with all of Lee's Agency novels, there is a bit of history sprinkled in. Readers are introduced to historical figures Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales; they learn about the prejudice against the Chinese at that time; and they discover some facts about Buckingham Palace. Girls of all ages will enjoy the fast pace, the twisting plot, and most of all, the romance that awaits them in The Traitor In The Tunnel. This is a great way to get young girls interested in Victorian England while letting them escape with a strong heroine at the helm. Mary Quinn is a young sleuth living in the 18th century. She's received special training from the agency that rescued her from the life of crime that she resorted to in order to survive. Her mission this time is simple enough: go undercover working as a maid at Buckingham Palace in order to determine who has been stealing from the queen. Mary's uncanny ability to move through the palace undetected helps her to uncover an even bigger crime. It seems that there may be a huge scandal that involves the young prince. Additionally, the same scandal may involve Mary's long estranged father! The suspense builds in this intriguing and well-written novel. Mary is an intuitive and intelligent character who is extremely likeable. Behind her strong exterior is a very empathetic human being who struggles in making difficult decisions. Will Mary be able to overlook her personal involvement, control her emotions, and solve the crime for which she was hired? Could she possibly diffuse the even bigger scandal that is brewing? Or will her cover be blown and, as a result, will innocent people be hurt by her actions and moments of self-doubt? Readers will anxiously turn the pages eager to uncover the answers. Y. S. Lee was born in Singapore but brought up in Canada. She has also lived briefly in the United Kingdom. An academic with a PhD in Victorian literature and culture, she wrote Masculinity and the English Working Class in Victorian Autobiography and Fiction. She lives in Ontario, Canada.

    So far this is my favorite book in the series. Of course this is

    So far this is my favorite book in the series. Of course this is the natural thing for most series because the characters and the world setting is mostly done in the first book. So we already have the established characters and just get to focus more on the plot of the story, which is a new mystery for Mary to solve.
    This time the characters involved may be closer to Mary than she would have ever thought. It not only develops a story within the Royal court at Buckingham Palace, but one that leads to her own past and could possible answer questions about her life.
    The suspense is knocked up a bit with a little more speed and urgency to keep the pacing as well as the combination of different questions she is trying to get answered leads to more than just one mystery to be solved. There is just a short introduction to set the setting of this mystery and some of the clues to what Mary will be looking for, with a twist.
    Mary is a strong lead character, very intelligent and brave. She is forced to accept some things in her personal life and grows up a lot emotionally. She is a lot more admirable person that I would have been in her place.
    There is also the romance factor, very cute and light. I give this one 4 stars

    Review of the best series
