Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This biographical collection begins, "Every saint has a story and there is a story and a saint for every human circumstance." The book's portrayal is artistic and humanistic, and far-reaching in terms of time and place. The book begins with historic explanations, significance and descriptions of bestowing sainthood. Following are masterpieces from all periods of art, accompanying short biographies describing more than forty-five saints from the more familiar, such as Mary and Joseph, to twentieth century Nigerian, Father Cyprian Michael Tansi. 1999, Viking, Ages 8 up, $19.99. Children's Literature - Laura Hummel
For centuries, Christians have been inspired by the stories and courage of martyrs. In the days when few could read, these tales were told during services and were made visible in paintings, tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, and stained class. In Mulvihill's collection of stories, dozens of heart-wrenching accounts are illustrated scores of these artistic masterpieces, including works by El Greco, Caravaggio, Georges de la Tour, Titian, and Rubins. The art selection is brilliant! Ingres's painting of Joan of Ark will capture the reader while others evoke pathos. Many personal histories of saints are informative and eloquently described. Among the many chronicled in the book are Saints Nicholas, Veronica, Elizabeth Seton, Wenceslas, Birgitta of Sweden, and Boniface. Poets and gravediggers take note; your patron saints are Columbia and Anthony respectively. Included in the text is a section on the background of saints and details on canonization, and the back endpapers give a calendar of the specific days of saints. The book is fascinating and would serve as a valuable reference for historians, educators, Biblical scholars and art scholars.

Gr 4-7-This meaty compendium provides short essays on the definition of a "saint," on the making of saints, and on four key periods in the history of Christianity. Brief biographical sketches introduce 50 saints, relate their engaging stories and give passing attention to their virtues and iconography. Males outnumber females by nearly four to one, though a few women walk on as mothers of male saints. The most egregious omission is any reference to Mother Teresa in the "Modern Saints" essay. The copious, full-color and black-and-white fine-art reproductions are well chosen and effectively laid out. There is no index to the art, however, and only sporadic identification of artists or dates. Nor have the saints been selected with art history in mind: popular artists' subjects (like Sebastian, Ursula, Jerome, Mary Magdalen) are missing, and iconographic symbols are not necessarily shown or mentioned (Paul's sword). There is a glossary (omitting friar, priory, lay brother, cloister) and a calendar of saints' days. The elegant beauty of the images is both homage and lure to our admiration of these inspiring models. Those interested in religion, ethics, art, literature, or social history will appreciate this treasury.-Patricia Lothrop-Green, St. George's School, Newport, RI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
