Theme of land, symbolism and heroism

The play dramatizes the events of the mau mau emergency in Kenya in the fifties. The conflict is not that of culture . it is more of a fight for political independence. In this play , the writers show a series of political events through the central consciousness of Kimathi. the violent mau mau groupsought to revolutionize the country by taking oath of allegiance and forcing people to do so. Revolutionary leaders like Kimathi sought to unite his people by speaking for them about the lost land. It is through these dead heros that Kenyans draw inpiration , because the blood of these heros serve as a seed which gave birth to a political party. Kimathi imagined himself as the chosen messiah-the one who would deliver the land from Colonial bondage. Kimathi also critizises the greed of the African elites and their disregard for the interest of the peasant masses.

    Ngugi's mastery

Ngugi's mastery is not only found in his ability to invite the audience to share in the suffering of a MAU MAU HERO ,the betrayal of the cause by black sycophants or rather black-shameless psychopaths but importantly in his exposure of the role played by women in the struggle for self liberation and determination..........an element neglected by many writers on the struggle for independence......an omission whinch has triggered and provoked feminist sensibilities..
