The activities mentioned are not the "hands on" type of activities, instead they are the type of activities where readers will research an event and then write about what they would have done in that historical setting. There are illustrations or photographs on every page. This is a good source of information for those wanting to learn more about the beginnings of safety regulations and workers rights. For further information on conditions of immigrants in New York, Shutting Out the Sky: Life in the Tenements of New York, 1880-1924 by Deborah Hopkinson is also a good resource. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 4-6-These books use dramatic episodes from American history as focal points and then provide the necessary background to create a more complete understanding of that period. All three have the same format: an introduction, four succinct chapters, and a conclusion. Excellent photographs and reproductions appear throughout, and text boxes with background and supplemental facts are also included. Moon Landing describes the Apollo program and then briefly traces recent developments in space exploration. A sidebar offers perspective on the technology of the 1960s to today's computer-savvy youngsters: "People still had black-and-white televisions." In the second title, reproductions of old newspaper articles, period photos, and a diagram enhance the description of the fire at the Triangle factory in New York City in 1911. Lexington and Concord traces the events leading up to the battle and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Clear maps indicate both the distribution of immigrant groups in the 13 Colonies and the routes taken by the British and the Patriots.
