In this story, the group of children from The Wampus Cat: A Tidal River Tale recount the delightful yet harrowing return boat trip they experienced with their friends and their grandfather. The story details the mysterious beauty of winding tidal rivers and a nearby sound that leads them to the National Wildlife Refuge Blackbeard Island and the awe-inspiring power of towering thunderstorms. Both books are useful on many levels in the classroom for students in 3rd and 4th grade. It has a readability level of 4.3-4.5 grade. It addresses a review of language arts skills with regard to figurative language, author's purpose, main idea, making predictions and supporting details. It is also very helpful for use as a resource on coastal or low country studies.
Debbie Philips is an educator in a school district in South Carolina. She has been in education for 18 years and has certifications in four areas. She and her husband have lived in the Summerville area for almost 30 years. They are privileged to have two children and five grandchildren. Debbie has enjoyed the coastal environments of Georgia and South Carolina since her youth. She is a hiker with an abiding love for the barrier islands, teeming marshes and winding tidal rivers of the southeast.
As a support services teacher, she has exposure to multiple grade level standards. This affords her an understanding of teachers’ need to have access to cross-curricular material that will address academic standards in varied and engaging ways. She hopes to create a series of “tidal river tales” in a coastal setting that serve that purpose.
