Tropics

Overview

The tropics are not only the birthplace of humankind but also home to 10 percent of the world's population, including 5 of the 10 most-populated countries. However, the region is not solely defined by its location; rather, its uniform weather and climatic characteristics-hot and humid throughout the year; little seasonal variation in temperature or precipitation; large amounts of annual precipitation, with no period of pronounced drought; and the world's highest annual average temperatures-set it apart from other...

Due to its wet climate, the tropical realm is also characterized by dense rain forest vegetation cover and agriculture that never requires irrigation.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Tourists flock to the tropical areas of our world in order to escape their everyday worries. Whether they are vacationing in the southeast tip of Mexico, South America's Amazon River basin or Africa's Congo River basin, they will find similarities in the environment. Known to scientists as wet tropics, these areas all have a consistently high temperature and abundant year round rainfall. Maps, charts, historical photographs, and current photographs help the reader to understand these areas and their definition. Readers will learn that people who live in these regions schedule their daily routine around the expected climate changes of these areas. Many activities will occur in the early morning, when it is the coolest. Often, by midday, most of the people will be eating, socializing, napping, or engaging in other indoor activities. Activity will resume in the late afternoon as temperatures cool and especially when late afternoon rains come. Our rain forest habitats are found in the tropics. The forest is filled with trees, plants, and vines as well as insects, birds, and other animals. It is thought by scientists, although not verified, that 80% of the animal species in the world live in the tropics. A historical timeline, bibliography, index, and further reading section make this a great resource for the middle school science class. This is also an excellent series for the media center collection. This series, "Geography of Extreme Environments," includes titles about other areas such as the deserts and polar regions.
