Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Sid's dad insists that he wash his hands before breakfast. When Sid rebels, Dad explains that he has a cold and that Sid could get sick from the germs. Sid does not see any germs, so his mom pulls up a computer program that shows how germs look under a very, very strong microscope. When Sid gets to school, he talks to his friends about germs and then his teacher conveniently teaches a lesson on this very subject. After her explanation she has the students dip their hands in dirt and try to wipe them clean. The kids discover the need for soap and water. "Germs are like that dirt," Teacher Susie explains. Sid washes his hands without being asked before he sits down for supper at home. The colorful photographs are framed like slides, linking the book to the TV series Sid the Science Kid. An appropriate book for beginning readers. "Sid the Science Kid" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
