The Trouble With the Package
Christmas can be perilous.
Did you ever have a Christmas that came off without a hitch? Did you ever suspect the whole Christmas thing was in tilt mode? Or that it was a little like a train that had somehow jumped its tracks and was dancing off through a meadow somewhere? Sure you have, and so did little eight-year-old Benny.

To Benny and his brother and sister, the idea seems simple enough: do something nice for their mother this Christmas. When their gift arrives in the mail, it turns out to be Benny’s job to hide it. It’s bad enough the package is bigger than Benny, but hiding it—and keeping it hidden—is likely to be more trouble, and terrifying, than Christmas is worth.

Benny’s story is about one of life’s little perils that come along for everyone, and keep us from thinking about what it is we celebrate at this season.

Note: “The Trouble with the Package” is a novelette-length story. It is also included as one of four novelettes in the ebook “In Search of a Perfect Christmas,” a collection of stories that also happen to occur at Christmas.
