Overview

To have and to hold from this day forward...
Darren McLaughlin thinks he’s having a nightmare as he watches his wife, Lilly, being abducted from a gas station in Chandler, Arizona. Things then go from bad to worse, when it’s revealed that her captor is one of the students she taught at a local high school.

For better or worse...
In Manhattan, US Attorney Aaron Eicher cringes upon learning the identity of the man who abducted Lilly McLaughlin. Nick was the one thing holding his case together against the son of Russian crime boss, Viktor Sarvydas—but now his star witness was on the run, and in mortal danger. It is just the latest surprise in a case that went against everything he’d learned in school—when it came to the Russian Mafiya 1+1=3.

Seeking refuge in Israel, fleeing the fallout of his son’s arrest, Viktor Sarvydas smiles when he learns the news about Nick’s escape. He knows that it’s now just a matter of time before he comes face to face with the man who was going to testify against his son.

With the FBI, media, and dueling Russian assassins in a cross-country race to get to Nick and Lilly, it becomes clear that the only one who can truly save them is Darren. Will he get to them first, or will...death do us part?

Meet the Author

Derek Ciccone is an avid fiction writer. Painless is the first one to be published, followed by The Trials of Max Q and The Truant Officer in 2011. Derek grew up in Connecticut and attended Arizona State University, where he graduated with a degree in Political Science. He now resides back in Connecticut and works as a Marketing Analyst for an advertising agency.
Derek’s stories are fast paced mystery/thrillers filled with suspense, humor and romance. But at their core are memorable, layered characters who take you into their world and make you not want to leave. The consistent trait of these characters is they are seemingly regular people who are placed into unthinkable situations.
When Derek’s not working or writing, he enjoys movies, playing basketball, and spending time with my family & friends. He also likes to read the writing of others, in which he really admires the character development of Nelson DeMille, the fast pacing of James Patterson, and the inventive plot twists of Harlan Coben.
For more information on Derek and his writing you can go to his website www.derekciccone.com or follow the progress of Painless or his other work by joining his interactive book club on Facebook.

    Couldn't put it down!!!!

After years of just reading my series authors, this is a great stand alone novel. Just when you think you know the ending, it changes. Amazing character building! Definitely will be looking for more by this author.

    Ineresting but not engaging

This book doesn't keep me reading when I should be sleeping as I don't find thr characters engaging. On the other hand it makes me wonder if there is a Russian mafia.

To say this is the worst book I have ever read would insinuate that I finished it, so it would be a false statement, similar to all the false statements that regard this book as a brilliant read.

Books are supposed to invoke the imagination, build suspense and give the reader the opportunity to forget the real world for a second and relax. Now this book does invoke the imagination, I was trying to imagine what drugs the author had recently taken.... I would probably assume it was coke or speed, as the poorly written dialogue comes at you 100mph and in such a way that you feel you are in an argument with a kid with ADHD... oh maybe its not drugs maybe the author just has a short attention span - which is not known to be the foundation for great literature, but if this is the case then it would explain the lack of depth to this book. Suspense is built, but it is built with a lightweight version of balsa wood and needless to say doesn't last long, as the chapters jump from one to the other within 5 pages - not one chapter is longer than 5 pages. I did also forget the real world for a split second, as this ludicrous story line jumped from Russian Mafia, to failed news reporter slapper, to stereotypical Mexican cop, to teacher to Israeli president to dead bent cop in the space of 2 chapters, i was taken to the magical place called Hollywood, a dream for every aspiring actor, but the only thing I could think of was that... even this couldn't happen in Hollywood. When you read a book and think, this would make a terrible film, then its not saying much about the book. I find it ironic that this authors first book is called painless, as I would stick my neck on the line and say that as it was written by the same pen it would be anything but painless for the reader.

The main problem that this author will find is that with quality of writing like this he has eliminated the majority of his audience. He has aimed this at those who still colour by numbers, read out loud in phonics with their finger under the words and are too stupid to employ and therefore would be reluctant to purchase a book.

The clear evidence behind the lackluster and amateur writing of this book is the amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes. This book is so bad the author hasn't even re read it.

Very good read. Definite page turner.

Very good plot line, good character development. You like the characters whom you should and don't like the antagonists. It kind of loses its way towards the end or I would give it 5 stars. There are a lot of character names and you may want to keep a note pad handy to keep them straight.

Wow! What an incredible story. The author keeps you guessing the whole way through. It was like peeling an onion back; you learn only what the author wants you to know at a given time. So as the story progresses the circumstances are constantly changing. The writing style was fresh and smart. This author is going to go far!

my 3rd book by this author.  I couldnt put this one down and the one I am reading is even better.  I like that books are also greater than 500 pages giving me more time with the characters.

    Not what I thought.

First got this thinking it was about a Truant Officer, loved it anyway. Kept me on my toes throughout the book. Couldn't tell which character was the good guy after awhile. Would recommend.

    Awesome read!

How many 4am mornings I have seen over the last couple days? The action and excitement does NOT stop. Great book! Normally I delete a freebook after I read it, I intend on giving this one second read just for the sake of re-reading it and living the journey over again. Hats off to the author! Thanks for the ride.
