"An account of the Burr conspiracy strikingly different." - The Outlook
"Presents a better picture of the real man than has yet been given." -West Virginia School Journal
"Adds much valuable material to the vexed question of Aaron Burr's place in American history." -The Literary News

Was Aaron Burr truly a traitor to his country, or was he a hero who saved the republic three times and was later effectively vilified by a targeted smear campaign?

Aaron Burr is today the most interesting and attractive character in American history. Mr. Todd's book is, in a word, controversial, but in its pages there are marshaled facts which too many so-called students of history have passed by without notice. Mr. Todd's book shows that this much condemned man had many good qualities and emphasizes Burr's invaluable services to America, poiniting out that he four times saved the cause of the Colonies. His gives an enthusiastic defense of an American in whom the historians, early and late, have found little to praise. Todd asserts that the Spanish archives at New Orleans and Mexico show that Burr intended by his "conspiracy" only the capture of Mexico and its ultimate annexation to the United States.

The trial of Aaron Burr versus Alexander Hamilton still goes on, though nearly a hundred years have passed since the fatal meeting on the banks of the Hudson; and one wonders whether a true verdict will ever be reached. A century's perspective should induce unbiased judgment and impartial deductions, and one, therefore, gives welcome to all statements of facts based on gleanings from newly-discovered evidence which will tend to a just appraisal of both these men. The present book, "The True Aaron Burr (1902)," by Charles Burr Todd presents Aaron Burr in many unfamiliar aspects, shedding much light on obscure passages in his checkered career. The sketch does not, however, confine itself merely to Burr's relations with Hamilton, but traces his early life, his service in the America: army, his great political activities, and his later life after the duel, during which the Blennerhassett episode played so large a part. Altogether, Mr. Todd's presentment adds much valuable material to the vexed question of Aaron Burr's place in American history.

The author was a collateral descendant of Aaron Burr and the historian of his family. In the present work he gives reminiscences of Burr related to him by several men who were educated for the bar by Aaron Burr and who enjoyed his confidence.

Mr. Todd argues that Burr was a victim of conspiracy; that documents in his favor have been suppressed by his biographers; that Mr. John Codman, for example, in his account of the Quebec expedition did him grievous injustice; that Mr. William Eleroy Curtis in his book on Jefferson has done the same; that old Spanish archives in New Orleans and Mexico contain the materials for his vindication; and that the forthcoming work of a young investigator, Mr. McCaleb, is going to reconstruct history in his behalf.
