About the Author

Hans Christian Andersen wurde am 2. April 1805 in Odense (Dänemark) geboren. Er war der Sohn eines armen Schuhmachers. Er konnte kaum die Schule besuchen, bis ihm der Dänenkönig Friedrich VI, dem seine Begabung aufgefallen war, 1822 den Besuch der Lateinschule in Slagelsen ermöglichte. Bis 1828 wurde ihm auch das Universitätsstudium bezahlt. Andersen unternahm Reisen durch Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien, die ihn zu lebhaften impressionistischen Studien anregten. Der Weltruhm Andersens ist auf den insgesamt 168 von ihm geschriebenen Märchen begründet. Andersen starb am 4.8.1875 in Kopenhagen.
