The Trumpet Shall Sound

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Released in celebration of the 70th birthday of the great trumpeter Maurice André, The Trumpet Shall Sound collects on two discs all the recordings the Frenchman made for Deutsche Grammophon, including transcriptions of Baroque music by Telemann and others, as well Haydn's Concerto and the familiar title-track excerpt from Handel's Messiah. Indisputably the 20th century's most influential classical trumpet player, André possesses an instantly recognizable sound -- sweet, well focused, and with a rapid vibrato -- that is complemented by astonishingly clean articulation, spot-on intonation, and an effortless, brilliant high range. He is known especially for his work with the piccolo trumpet, a high-pitched instrument that André wielded while claiming large swaths of the Baroque concerto repertoire that was not originally written for the trumpet. In fact, nearly the entire first disc and a portion of the second is filled with transcriptions of concertos intended for oboe and flute by their composers. Yet with André's inimitable virtuosity and expressive flair, the old masters would surely have been thrilled by his classy renditions. Of course, much of the music here does call specifically for the trumpet, and the first disc ends with Haydn's landmark E-flat Concerto as well as a concerto from Michael Haydn younger brother to Franz Joseph that demands notes so astonishingly high for the trumpet that you shouldn't be surprised if your dog sits up and takes notice. Additional music on the second disc includes Vivaldi's festive Two-Trumpet Concerto André takes both parts and the well-known title work, in which baritone Franz Crass joins in. Some listeners may wish for a few more staples of the trumpet repertoire -- the Hummel or Leopold Mozart concertos, for instance. Still, taken together, it's a fine introduction to the art of André, undeniably one of the finest who ever blew a horn.
All Music Guide - Patsy Morita
To celebrate Maurice André's 70th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon has combined all four of the recordings he made with the label in the 1960s and 1970s into a two-CD package. What's memorable about the discs are those pieces most familiar to listeners: the Franz Josef Haydn "Concerto for trumpet in E flat major" and the Vivaldi "Concerto for two trumpets in C major," in which André performs both parts. Both works are played with liveliness and a respect for the music. What also sticks out are the incredibly high notes in the first movement of the concerto by Michael Haydn, which even André struggles to reach. His transcriptions of oboe concertos by Telemann and Handel allow him to demonstrate singing lines of melody and ornaments not normally found in works for trumpet. The second disc contains a good selection of Italian and German Baroque works ranging from early to high Baroque. In the Alessandro Scarlatti "Sinfonia for flute, trumpet & strings" and "Sonata Prima for trumpet & organ" by Viviani, the trumpet seems to unnecessarily overpower the other soloists. However, the trumpet is decidedly not overpowering bass soloist Franz Crass in the aria "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from "The Messiah." This set certainly shows why André is as well respected as he is and will give the Baroque trumpet music fan a chance to hear something other than Clarke's voluntaries or Purcell's "Trumpet Tunes."
