Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.

Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.

For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love. But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.

Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.

The Truth She Knew offers an honest and powerful glimpse into mental illness, the meaning of true love, and the psychological waltz that a daughter dances as she endures her mother’s unpredictable emotions, manipulation, and abuse.

COMPELLING! The Truth She Knew by J.A. Owenby is the compelling story of a young woman who is torn between loyalty to an abusive, controlling, mentally ill mother and her desire to find love and seek out a life of her own. This gripping page –turner brings light to the darkness of a secretly dysfunctional family and takes the reader through a journey they will not soon forget—a journey through the plight of the victims of those affected by the mentally ill. Owenby skillfully weaves a poignant story of first love into the protagonist’s plight. I look forward to reading more from this talented writer. Highly recommended for readers age 18+. ~ Bette A. Stevens, Maine author of award-winning picture book Amazing Matilda (Children's Literature): The Tale of A Monarch Butterfly and other inspirational books for children and adults.

When an author writes from the heart, the story they tell will draw you in and keep you there, often wanting more as the last page is turned. Best book I have read in a long time! The storyline is very unique and keeps the reader wondering what will happen next. I don’t know many authors who have the guts to write about mental illness this way and provide such a level of detail regarding the emotional roller coaster loved ones go through. My favorite aspect of J.A. Owenby’s writing is that she has an incredible way of linking the reader and Lacey together, not just through one’s mind but in one’s hearts and soul. As I read, I was able to feel what Lacey felt – hope, love, loss, confusion, hate. I can’t wait for book 2 to come out so I can continue my journey with her and see where life takes her. I highly recommend this book, even if it doesn’t appear to be something you would normally be interested in. Its uniqueness is refreshing.

Disclaimer: This book was provided free in return for an honest review. What began as a commitment well outside the comfort of my customary genres quickly turned into a privilege. J. A. Owenby’s debut novel THE TRUTH SHE KNEW is a compelling journey into a darker side of human reality. It is an extraordinary story about love... and hate... and about finding that which is precious... and losing that which is priceless... and it also is about mental illness... and surviving extreme parental abuse. Lacey’s story is easily one of the most touching and captivating books I’ve had the good fortune to discover in my seven decades as a reader, five as a writer. The best of superlatives do not come even close to doing justice to this superbly written masterpiece. No one should be surprised to learn THE TRUTH SHE KNEW has attracted interest from the movie industry. It’s easy to visualize this remarkable novel on the big screen. Five stars seem insufficient. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.

O.m.g. I just read the entire book this morning, literally in just a few hours! It was so good, I didn't want it to end. I want to see what Lacey does next! I'm in love with the characters. They are so real and relatable. Wow!

J.A. Owenby has done an excellent job of tackling in fiction format, the difficult subjects of mental illness, abuse, and how they can tear a family apart. Mama is a very real and formidable character who shows such hatred towards her daughter, Lacey. Likewise, Lacey is portrayed well and we feel for her and want to protect her as though we were her own friend. Their dysfunctional relationship stands in stark contrast to the love story that develops and is woven into the novel. A great first book! Well done!

I read J.A. Owenby's short stories last year, and they left a memorable impression upon me. Learning she was writing this book, The Truth She Knew, I was very excited to read! I was blown away with the author's style of writing and found myself highlighting several passages as I read. I was intrigued to learn more about Lacey and mother from the very beginning, and I kept turning the pages until I almost finished in one sitting to see how the story unfolded. A truly powerful book dealing with sensitive issues in a sensitive and thought-provoking manner. This really is an extraordinary story and a must read for 2016. I eagerly look forward to reading the next book by this author.
