Overview

Returning to the themes of her classic Drama of the Gifted Child, the famed psychoanalyst examines the consequences of cruelty to children and offers ways we can heal our early psychic wounds
More than twenty years ago, a little-known Swiss psychoanalyst wrote a book that changed the way many people viewed themselves and their world. In simple but powerful prose, the deeply moving Drama of the Gifted Child showed how parents unconsciously form and deform the emotional lives of their children. Alice Miller's stories about the roots of suffering in childhood resonated with readers, and her book soon became a backlist best seller.
In The Truth Will Set You Free Miller returns to the intensely personal tone and themes of her best-loved work. Only by embracing the truth of our past histories can any of us hope to be free of pain in the present, she argues. Miller uses vivid true stories to reveal the perils of early-childhood mistreatment and the dangers of mindless obedience to parental will. Drawing on the latest research on brain development, she shows how spanking and humiliation produce dangerous levels of denial, which leads in turn to emotional blindness and to mental barriers that cut off awareness and the ability to learn new ways of acting. If this cycle repeats itself, the grown child will perpetrate the same abuse on later generations—a message vitally important, especially given the increasing popularity of programs like Tough Love and of "child disciplinarians" like James Dobson. The Truth Will Set You Free will provoke and inform all readers who want to know Alice Miller's latest thinking on this important subject.

Author Biography: Alice Miller has achieved worldwide recognition for her work on the causes and effects of childhood traumas. Understanding Cycles of Abuse

Alice Miller is a true trailblazer. Although her other books, such as Thou Shalt Not Be Aware and For Your Own Good, may be more well-known, The Truth Will Set You Free: Overcoming Emotional Blindness and Finding Your True Adult Self, provides an accessible and easily understood entry into her penetrating and potentially liberating ideas. In my opinion, For Your Own Good and Thou Shalt Not Be Aware are excellent books and deserve to be read. However, these books do require more time to read and understand. The Truth Will Set You Free is a relatively quick read that will whet your appetite for sharing more time with this insightful person. Dr. Miller also has a website that contains many of her articles, as well as a forum and reader mail pages. As for me, her books have illuminated how family traumas and abuse are cycled through the generations, often despite the best intentions of more than one generation. Time spent considering and absorbing Dr. Miller's ideas can provide a person seeking help understanding these kinds of painful issues with deeper, more humane, and, ultimately, more practical and useful ways of thinking about complex problems that often seem incomprehensible.

Featherstripe pads to the side with the cacti and slices one of them open. She collects the water from inside with the moss and takes some of the flowers from the cacti. Then she pads to the brambles on the border and disappears.

I copy Chaia, only I perch on the very edge of the rock. It lurches sickeningly, and the water laps hungrily below me. I jump in surprise, sending the rock tumbling into the river. I fall after it and disappear beneath the depths with a splash. The darkness swirls around me, oddly mesmerizing. I watch, my yellow eyes glowing in the shadowy water. A sharp chill snaps me into reality, and I kick out with my long legs. I'm built for running, not strength, so fighting the current is tough. I break the surface and scramble onto the shore, coughing up water. My fur hangs, sopping, from my body. I'm stick-thin, but my thick fur gives me a more... muscular appearance. I shake out my pelt, hoping to hide my scrawniness. I'm not so lucky. I turn to Chaia, grinning wildly.
