Editorial Reviews

Ilene Cooper
Based on the author's nationally syndicated column, this book brings together first-person remembrances and advice from over 100 celebrities, who discuss the events that have changed their lives. Though the premise seems simplistic, Plaskin actually makes it work. Casting his net widely, he's garnered contributions from an impressive array of celebs--from Audrey to Katharine Hepburn, from Geraldo Rivera to Malcolm Forbes. A master of pith, he distills what must have been much longer conversations into 2-page vignettes. Many of the stories are familiar (the suicide of Joan Rivers' husband, Helen Gurley Brown's rise from rags to riches), but in their short form they are less cloying and occasionally possess a succinct sweetness. A very entertaining collection, though the publisher may want to eliminate Mia Farrow's happy pivotal moment--meeting Woody Allen.
