This Halcyon Classics ebook is a modern English translation of De vita Caesarum, commonly known as THE TWELVE CAESARS by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus. THE TWELVE CAESARS is a set of twelve biographies of Julius Caesar and the first eleven emperors of the Roman Empire.

While the life of Julius Caesar is only partially complete, the lives of the remaining emperors, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, and Domition are complete and provide an important source of information on the early emperors, the empire, and the daily lives of the Roman aristocracy.

About the Author

Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (c.69/75-c.130), was a Roman writer and biographer belonging to the equestrian order in the early Imperial era. His most important surviving work is THE TWELVE CAESARS. Other works by Suetonius concern the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. Suetonius even completed a work on prostitutes, LIVES OF FAMOUS WHORES. Aside from THE TWELVE CAESARS, most of Suetonius' writings have been lost.
