Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
The 100 Best Poems of All Time? Why not? Although every list like this is controversial, the selections here seem as good as any. They are thoughtful, varied, and vast in scope, inclusive in both material and style. Chronologically arranged, the collection starts with an excerpt from The Iliad and ends with Maya Angelou's "I Still Rise." The variety of work is impressive. It includes populist pieces like "This Land Is Your Land" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" next to the classics of Chaucer and Shakespeare. It embraces the holy, with "Psalm 23" and an excerpt from "The Song of Songs," and the nonsensical "Jabberwocky." It ranges from the objectivism of Williams' "The Red Wheelbarrow" to the confessional tones of Sexton and Plath, from the metaphysical poetry of Donne to the beat work of Ginsberg. It contains everything from translations of Li Po and Lorca and Neruda to the very American "Harlem [Dream Deferred]" by Langston Hughes. It seems to especially relish the spoken word, including pieces like "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and "Casey at the Bat," but it also takes in the contemplative "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Each of the poems is introduced by a concise yet interesting and helpful comment from the editor that helps this collection function as both an overview of and an initiation into the world of poetry through the ages. A debatable title? Certainly! But as good and varied a collection as any basic and general poetry anthology could hope to be. With topics ranging from 132 notable American writers to 65 ridiculous America sex laws, this book coins itself a browsing book, a historical companion and an argument settler. Written in an informative, readable format, the author has created a book designed to be picked up again and again, with information spread through useful lists (153 state websites and phone numbers, the 10 articles of the Bill of Rights) and trivial lists (9 bearded or mustachioed U.S. Presidents, 7 strange American car names, or the 57 varieties of Heinz condiments).
