Overview

Kids love snacks. While these unhealthy commercial products are a problem for any child, they pose a special danger when kids have food allergies, since nearly all supermarket treats contain dairy, eggs, wheat (gluten), soy, peanuts, or tree nuts—the six key foods that cause over 80 percent of all food allergies. To help parents gain some control, Judi and Shari Zucker have written The Ultimate Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook, a collection of over one hundred nutritious and delicious allergen-free treats.

The book begins by looking at food allergy basics. This is followed by a complete recipe section of both sweet and savory treats, including Party Snacks, Travel Treats, Lunch Box Snacks, and Sport Snacks. Throughout, you will find useful tips and suggestions to help make it easier to prepare healthful snacks and introduce them to your kids.

No parent wants to say “no” when their child asks for an mid-morning or afternoon snack. With over one hundred natural, healthful, tasty treats to choose from, not only will you say “yes” to your child, but you’ll feel good about it.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Considering more than 12 million Americans suffer from some form of allergies, twin sisters Judi and Shari Zucker's guide to creating simple and nutritious snacks for those suffering a litany of allergies will likely be received with gratitude. Divided into roughly two books—one with information and tips on dealing with food allergies and intolerances, and the other with over a hundred recipes—the duo offer sensible advice and dishes that are easy to prepare. Incorporating what is essentially a vegan approach to cooking and baking, the Zuckers (The Double Energy Diet) provide families with myriad kid-friendly snack choices, from gluten-free pizza crust, granola and trail mix, to blueberry muffins and more than a dozen smoothies. Substitutions—such as sunflower seeds for pine nuts in pesto and allergy-friendly carob powder in lieu of cocoa in brownies and fudge—enable snackers to replicate the real thing (a full list of ingredient substitutions and recipe adjustments is included, as well as a comprehensive list of ingredients to avoid in processed foods) without sacrificing much in terms of flavor or texture. First-time bakers and cooks will appreciate the fact that esoteric and arcane ingredients are kept to a minimum, and those new to dealing with a family member's diagnosis will find the Zuckers' insight into dealing with allergies to be a welcome resource. Newsday - Peggy Brown

"Their guide is useful for parents who want to protect their kids from allergic reactions--and avoid junk food, too. You'll learn a lot: how potentially dangerous peanut protein can be in enchilada sauce, or that soy can be in herbal teas or sprayed on produce to make it shiny."

Library Journal
The Zucker twins (The Double Energy Diet) have advocated healthful eating for decades, and their latest book focuses on snacks that are not only nutritious but also free of the eight most common allergens (eggs, cow's milk, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish). They begin with helpful information about allergies, allergens, and ingredient labeling, as well as encouragement for improving one's diet. Ranging from savory to sweet, recipes use common ingredients and basic techniques. Treats such as fruit smoothies, Killer Kale Crisps, Chickpea Crackers, and Sunny Granola Crunch offer tasty ways to get kids to eat fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains instead of processed snacks. VERDICT Made up of easy recipes that are all vegetarian and free of refined sugar, gluten, and major allergens, this book is a nice complement to cookbooks such as Leslie Hammond and Lynne Marie Rominger's Allergy Proof Recipes for Kids and recent allergen baking books by Kelly Rudnicki and Cybele Pascal. It should appeal to people of all ages who are interested in healthy snacking.—Jude Baldwin, Shasta Coll., Redding, CA
