The Ultimate Collection [Universal]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Unlike his other greatest hits' packages -- the 12-song Back to Back: Greatest Hits and the 20-song All Time Greatest Hits -- Barry White's The Ulitmate Collection won't leave you longing for more. This 30-song double disc is sure to satisfy even the Love Don's fussiest fans, with the inclusion of lighthearted, reverential classics such as "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" and "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" alongside the more explicit boudoir favorites the baritone is infamous for -- such as the bass-heavy "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me" and the hypnotic "I'm Gonna Love You, Just a Little More Baby." The seductive mix also spotlights some of ...

The seductive mix also spotlights some of White's more recent hits, including "Staying Power," the title track from his last album, and the 1994 comeback smash "Practice What You Preach." If this collection sounds like the most pleasurable tour through White's music, then as the Sultan of Sensuality would say, sho' you right.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The Ultimate Collection gathers two discs' worth of Barry White's greatest hits and definitive tracks, as selected by White himself. Along with the title track from his 1999 album Staying Power, the set collects '70s hits like "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe," "You're the First, the Last, My Everything," and "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" and highlights of his work with the Love Unlimited Orchestra such as "My Sweet Summer Suite," "Midnight and You," and "Love's Theme." Later tracks like "Sho' You Right," "Put Me in Your Mix," and "Practice What You Preach" round out this worthwhile overview of White's career highlights.

The Most Complete Barry White Hits Set

Unlike 1995's "All - Time Greatest Hits", this 30 - song collection of Barry's biggest hits will not leave fans craving for more. With tracks by both Barry and the Love Unlimited Orchestra, this cd is qualified to satisfy. Disc 1 contains the big hits from the early years. Songs like "Never Never Gonna Give You Up", "Honey, Please Can't Ya See", "I've Got So Much To Give" and "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" still remain some of the freshest pieces of pop music after more than 30 years. Smilarly, the Love Unlimited Orchestra instrumentals have stood the test times, especially "My Sweet Summer" Suite", with its sweeping strings and drum beats. Disc 2 opens with the one - two punch of "Love's Theme" and "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me", the latter being the last top 10 hit of Barry's career (# 4 in 1977). Next comes the lush "Oh What A Night For Dancing", followed bythe in - the - pocket grooves of "Playing Your Game Baby". "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness" is one of Barry's best dance songs, though the longer version is much more discoey. His cover of "Just The Way You Are" is a winner, and now that "Love Serenade, Parts 1 and 2" are onetrack, the songs takes new meaning. "Satin Soul" has always been my favorite Love Unlimited Orchestra number, while "It Ain't Love Babe (Until You Give It)" is fast, Latin - tinged number with sultry vocals. "Love Makin' Music" is nice, slow and sexy, while "Sho' You Right" is one the better songs from his late '80s catalogue. "Put Me In Your Mix" is very provocative with its lush string arrangemnt and its line "I Can Make Your Toenails Curl". "Practice What You Preach" was Barry's last big hit, peaking at # 18 on the Hot 100. It recalls his early 1970s' heyday, especially in the vocals. "Come On" is lightweight but okay. The last track is "Staying Power", his last single to make any chart in 1999, peaking at a lowly # 45 on the R & B charts. Overall, this a complete set of The Man's biggest hits. It may be the most complete. So I highly recommend it.
