Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Did you know that Bill Mosienko of the Chicago Blackhawks once scored three goals in twenty-one seconds? Did you realize that Wayne Gretsky holds more individual records than any other hockey player? Are you aware that Glen Hall of the Detroit Redwings and Chicago Blackhawks played 502 straight complete regular season games as a goalie? These are but a sampling of the record making performances that are encapsulated in this illustrated compilation of statistics linked to professional hockey. The National Hockey League (NHL) has a storied history stretching back for decades. In the many years that professional hockey players skated on ice surfaces in search of puck luck and glory some individuals and teams established standards that became records. Whether it is goal scoring, goaltending, winning or losing a benchmark exists for the greatest or worst performances in NHL history. In this encyclopedic publication readers with an interest in hockey can learn about many of these record setting accomplishments. For example, readers interested in goalies can discover the all-time best save percentages, career shutout totals, season best win totals, or longest shutout streaks. Likewise scoring, coaching, and team records through the 2011 season are presented in a way that any hockey fan should appreciate. In addition stories about particular accomplishments or record setting performances are peppered throughout the book in a way that augments the statistics. Readers who are hockey fans, or those simply interested in sports in general, should find this book of interest. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck; Ages 10 to 14.
