Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This gardening overview is divided into four sections: "The Contained Garden," "The Garden in Bloom," "Garden Style," and "Garden Themes." Subjects range from ground covers and annuals to fruit, alpine, and water gardens. But because of the sheer number of subjects included, each topic is covered in a mere two to four pages, with minimal text--though the many spectacular photographs show a wide variety of plants, gardens, and garden styles. Entire books are available on many of these topics, so McGlynn is only touching upon each. She concludes with lists of plants in various categories--container plants, border plants, trees and shrubs, etc.--but omits USDA hardiness zones. While this book would be useful to browsers choosing a style of garden or looking to add to established gardens, it is an optional purchase for most libraries.--Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Hall
This jumbo book takes gardeners shopping for ideas, touching on everything from petunias in entryway containers and poppy-filled wildflower meadows to transcendent Japanese gravel gardens. There are peeks at cactus beds and Alpine plants, introductions to flowering shrubs and glimpses of potagers, the geometric herb-and-flora beds of the Renaissance.
This is a book of images, and it covers a great deal of ground. Photographs take up the bulk of The Ultimate Gardening Book, with short text accompanying the scores of topics: winter, water irises, small spaces, hot borders, lawns, scents.
Author McGlynn divides the book into four sections. "The Contained Garden" examines using potted plants strategically, indoors and out, to vitalize dull spaces and introduce structure and surprise, such as planting sunflowers in a series of terra cotta pots. "The Garden in Bloom" takes a trip through branches and blooms, touching on gardening basics like borders, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs and choosing color. Occasional instructions inform, in steps, how to, for instance, transplant properly or built a small pebble fountain.
The basics of design are covered in "Garden Style," in which McGlynn runs through formal and informal layouts, frameworks such as evergreens and pergolas and planting for texture, color and height. Themes -- flowers, ponds, woodlands and herbs -- are covered in the final section.
A useful list at the end of the book includes plants for different types of gardens, broken down by color, foliage, season, height and other categories. It's helpful, even including common names, but it doesn't include information on suitable climates for each plant.
The Ultimate Gardening Book covers acres of ideas, but sometimes lacks depth. The images, nonetheless, are inspiring.
