Mane Colors and Style
Most ponies agree: colors opposite of the color wheel and colors next to each other go well together (if you don't know what a color wheel is, I suggest you look it up)
What does this mean? It means that red works well with orange, purple, and green. (Getting technical, you might say that red goes well with red-violet, red-orange, and green.)
Most ponies have 1-3 colors in their hair. 4/6 of my OCs hve 1 mane color. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to give your oc a rainbow mane.
Colors covered, correct? Let's move on to mane style. This part is important. Very important.
Once upon a time, Bubbleburst was an earth pony with orrie colors. But that's not all. Her mane was styled exactly like Applejack. She was accused of being "lazy" and "uncreative."
A recolor. Recolors ARE NOT BAD in my opinion. They are fine. But, never make a recolor because you are lazy. That just reinforces the stereotype. But, an Earth Pony with Rainbow Dash's hair style isn't a recolor.
Style: Poofy (like Pinkie), Wavy (Like Fluttershy), Coiled (Like Rarity), Straight (like Twilight), Shaggy (like Rainbow), or curly (like Sweetie Belle)? You ca also choose to hae it held bak like AJ. Is your mane long, medium, or short? Do you have bangs like Rainbow Dash, or does your mae fall to the side of your head like Rarity? Look at canon ponies, you might find some inspiring styles.
