Blessing. (Chapter "Pure Logic").
Problem.

Peter and Ann are going to marry each other. They are asking for the blessing of Ann’s father (an old nasty mathematician).

"Well", he says, "I’ll give you my blessing if you pass this test: Peter will be sitting in one room, Ann in another one. I’ll put a black or white cap on Peter’s head and a black or white cap on Ann’s head. Then I’ll let Peter know the color of Ann’s cap and I’ll let Ann know the color of Peter’s cap. Peter’s task will be to figure out the color of his cap, and Ann’s task will be to figure out the color of her cap. If one of you makes a correct guess, or both of you guess correctly, then you pass the test and receive my blessing. If both of you are wrong you do not have my blessing.

You may discuss the test before it starts, but you will not see or hear each other or have any other possible contacts or information during the test."

Can Peter and Ann find the winning strategy?

Hint.

Sure they can! Now tell me how.
Solution.

Peter and Ann can make the following agreement.

When Ann’s father lets Peter know the color of Ann’s cap Peter has to say: "My cap has the same color".

When Ann’s father lets Ann know the color of Peter’s cap Ann has to say: "My cap has different color".

This only leaves two possible outcomes:

1) They have the caps of the same color. In this case Peter is right and they get the blessing.

2) They have the caps of different colors. In this case Ann is right and they get the blessing as well.
