The Ultimate Tango [Polygram]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
The tango has been around for almost a century now, surviving many transformations, and The Ultimate Tango shows just how far this dance form has come. Born in the bordellos and bars of Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city, the tango soon became an international dance craze and, more recently, has provided inspiration for classical performers, film directors, and Broadway producers. The tangos here are drawn from a variety of sources: the soundtrack to Carlos Saura's 1997 film, Tango led by Lalo Schifrin, a 1981 album by Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo, and several lavishly orchestrated versions by Mantovani and other "easy-listening" arrangers.
Not everything here was originally intended to be a tango -- the traditional tune "Dark Eyes," for instance heard in an opulent arrangement by Stanley Black, though its melody does have the sultry, nostalgic character common to the classic examples of the form. Schifrin's leaner arrangements come closest to the true Argentine sound, although an authentic tanguero would still give them more of a bittersweet bite. Add in Domingo's honeyed tone, and you get an album that's an ideal introduction to the tango for listeners with a sweet tooth.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
Highlighting the timeless music of the tango, this CD shows the breadth of this style and how it crosses boundaries between jazz, dance music, and classical composition. The expert songwriting of Astor Piazzolla, the vocal passion of Placido Domingo, and the strong performances of groups like Montovani and his Orchestra combine to make this a fine introduction to the music of this dance of love.
