Overview

Gerard Way, of My Chemical Romance, makes his comics writing debut in this outrageous superhero epic that Grant Morrison called "An ultraviolet psychedelic sherbet bomb of wit and ideas. The superheroes of the 21st century are here at last..."

In an inexplicable, worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world." These seven children form The Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again

    Truely Amazing

I'm a big fan of MCR, but when I heard that Gerard Way was getting a comic book published, I thought it wasn't going to be any good. But recently I read a review of 'The Umbrella Academy' and it was full of praise. So I decided to give it a go and read it. It's the first comic book I've ever read, but it was truely amazing. Now I'm hooked and I keep rereading it. If you're thinking of buying it, don't hesitate. You will definatly enjoy it.

Was not impressed. Should have bought something else.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE graphic novels but Umbrella Academy was a let down for me. I admit, the awesome cover art (many many compliments to master artist James Jean)and some reviews I read about the storyline is what drew me in to buying UA: Apocalypse Suite. The characters and their powers are very original but they are not useful at all. Only half of the team is even able to actually FIGHT using their powers. I did not see any 'witty' or 'amazing' dialogue. What I read was average and nothing spectacular, groundbreaking or new. Just about average stuff. I read about half of it and I had already lost interest in it. I was hoping the ending of the book would make UA worth me buying so I read the entire thing. I was completely disappointed. I was amazed(not in a good way) at the end. Overall it was ok. Not great or awesome but just ok. An ok buy if you're curious about it. Props for: Gerard Way's original characters. James Jean's cover art. No Props for: Storyline and lack of depth. Average Dialogue. Inside illustrations (probably more suited for children).

    Incredible

Like the "Royal Tenanbaums" meets the "X-Men" but less depressing and preachy. Such a fun read.

My chemical romance has a writer:)

I just love Gerard Way and I listen to his band all the time. I read so many reviews about this book that I really want to read it. Even though I have not read it just yet I'm sure that I will be a really good book for everybodys taste.

    I Also Recommend:

I'm sure all of the puns have already been taken.

I took me awhile before getting around to reading this and I'm very sorry for that.

Umbrella Academy is an offbeat superhero story with "normal" heroes. Heroes who don't want to be heroes, or fail at being heroes. No one is invincible, no one leaves without injury, some of them even mortal and/or life altering.

The tone of the story is friendly, more cinematic or like someone telling it to you, rather than reading it.

The only negative I have for it is that I wish that their was a pause button, or slow button so that it lasted longer. As you read it you have the feeling that their are other words in between the panels that you can't see and if you could the story would be richer for it.

as a my chemical romance && comic book lover...

oh. my. gosh! gerard way, of my chemical romance, is talented in both musical && literal arts. His new comic book entitled 'The Umbrella Academy' writes out a wonderful story from the depths of Way's highly imaginative and creative mind! I would recommend this comic to ANYONE who believes that not ALL comic books should be idiotic and brain rotting, but enjoys a comic that has a true STORY behind it, and has a hint of political sense in it. (: MCRmy

An Amazing Story from an Amazing Team!

When I heard Gerard Way had a comic out there, I was excited but one question popped into my mind, "How can Gee write a comic while on tour with MCR?"
I was a bit skeptical, but I'm completely happy with my purchase. The plot-line is very imaginative and creative; The artwork's style adds extra flair to the story. One of my favorite parts of the book is in the back. They include teaser short-stories that were used to promote the book and Gerard's artwork for the pitch. It's something unique in my eyes to not only be able to see the final outcome, but to be able to see the changes the characters have made since Gerard first opened his sketch book.
I can't stop re-reading this book and I highly recommend it to anyone with a love of graphic novels as well as anyone with a taste for an additive and dramatic plot.

    Completely Worth it

I have just been getting into graphic novels but when i heard Gerard wrote The Umbrella Academy, I figured it would be a good one to start off reading, and I was right. Not just the art but the story is so original and it kept me reading. I am a big fan of MCR but that has nothing to do with me enjoying the UA. I do find it confusing in some areas but overall it was very enjoyable. I know Gerard is writing a new comic so that makes me excited to see what his creative mind has come up with next.
