I'm a big fan of MCR, but when I heard that Gerard Way was getting a comic book published, I thought it wasn't going to be any good. But recently I read a review of 'The Umbrella Academy' and it was full of praise. So I decided to give it a go and read it. It's the first comic book I've ever read, but it was truely amazing. Now I'm hooked and I keep rereading it. If you're thinking of buying it, don't hesitate. You will definatly enjoy it.

I had never picked up a comic book, but I was getting this one to surprise my boyfriend. I ended up wanting to skim it, then I got hooked. I almost wanted to keep it and not give it to him! I'm definitely buying myself a copy! The artwork was amazing, I could look at it for days. The storyline really pulls you in. Half the time I was reading my mother was trying to talking to me with no avail. Everyone who loves MCR, Gerard Way, or just comics, should totally buy this!

I took me awhile before getting around to reading this and I'm very sorry for that. Umbrella Academy is an offbeat superhero story with "normal" heroes. Heroes who don't want to be heroes, or fail at being heroes. No one is invincible, no one leaves without injury, some of them even mortal and/or life altering. The tone of the story is friendly, more cinematic or like someone telling it to you, rather than reading it. The only negative I have for it is that I wish that their was a pause button, or slow button so that it lasted longer. As you read it you have the feeling that their are other words in between the panels that you can't see and if you could the story would be richer for it.

Like the "Royal Tenanbaums" meets the "X-Men" but less depressing and preachy. Such a fun read.

I have just been getting into graphic novels but when i heard Gerard wrote The Umbrella Academy, I figured it would be a good one to start off reading, and I was right. Not just the art but the story is so original and it kept me reading. I am a big fan of MCR but that has nothing to do with me enjoying the UA. I do find it confusing in some areas but overall it was very enjoyable. I know Gerard is writing a new comic so that makes me excited to see what his creative mind has come up with next.

oh. my. gosh! gerard way, of my chemical romance, is talented in both musical && literal arts. His new comic book entitled 'The Umbrella Academy' writes out a wonderful story from the depths of Way's highly imaginative and creative mind! I would recommend this comic to ANYONE who believes that not ALL comic books should be idiotic and brain rotting, but enjoys a comic that has a true STORY behind it, and has a hint of political sense in it. The Umbrella Academy  Story by Gerard Way  Art by Gabriel Ba  Volume 01 Apocalypse Suite  Cover Art by James Jean  Trade Paperback  192 pages  Publisher: Dark Horse; 1st edition  Publication Date: June 24, 2008  ISBN-13: 978-1593079789      The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite by Gerard Way (lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance) is a weirdly beautiful concept and story. A group of seven gifted orphans have been collected after their birth by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a.k.a. “The Monocle” to save the world from evil threats. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…      Spaceboy has enhanced physical strength and a human head grafted onto the body of a Martian gorilla; The Kraken, a Batman-like superhero can hold his breath indefinitely and is an expert knife thrower; The Rumor can alter reality by lying; The Séance can levitate, talk to the dead, and use telekinesis but only when barefoot; Number Five (The Boy), is considered to be “The perfect assassin” since he has the DNA of the best killers in history, he can time travel too; The Horror, possesses monsters from another dimension under his skin and is dead; and The White Violin who shows no visible powers but is believed to be the most powerful of all the members of the Umbrella Academy, she’s capable of releasing destructive waves of energy when she plays her violin.      Together the seven adopted siblings of the Umbrella Academy defend Paris against the Zombie Robot attack of Gustave Eiffel, save the world from “The Conductor” of “The Orchestra Verdammten”, defeat Dr. Terminal’s Terminauts, stop the final apocalypse, and fight (like siblings do) each other. Like I said, weirdly beautiful…      One note about the characters and their abilities; creatively speaking the names and abilities of most of the superheroes in the Umbrella Academy are mostly unique. We’ve all seen super strong and time travelling superheroes in the comics before, but this cast of characters is so flawed in so many ways that they go around the bend from weird and slingshot back to normal again. Gerard Way has an active and seriously warped and wonderful imagination and I hope he continues to create graphic novel stories for a long time to come. 5 out of 5 stars The Alternative Southeast Wisconsin
