Overview

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books. Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive. Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she's struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn't easy -- not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she's really safe. Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She's sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she'll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels? With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Unbound delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—In this sequel to The Archived (Hyperion, 2013), sleep eludes Mackenzie Bishop. She's traumatized by violent nightmares of Owen and later theorizes that the sadistic History might not be confined solely to her fraying mind. People with whom Mac has limited contact start disappearing, and voids crop up where they were last seen. Mac suspects someone is trying to create evidence that will get her relieved of duty as a Keeper. When her concerned parents justifiably hover, making trips to the Archive and the Narrows difficult, Mac has trouble keeping up with the Histories assigned to her. Fortunately, charming Wesley also attends Mac's new prep school, offering more than friendship and backup. But can Mac risk getting closer to Wes with danger already her companion? An exciting climax carefully ties up certain threads, while a well-executed final chapter promises a further installment. Schwab's characters are distinct, and she has a talent for conveying the connections between them. The mystery and waiting-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop sense of foreboding is sustained throughout. Wesley and Mac's romantic tension is palpable, and their dialogue is natural, with plenty of entertaining banter. While Schwab includes bits of explanation and flashbacks, readers will be better served reading this suspenseful and engrossing supernatural series in order.—Danielle Serra, Cliffside Park Public Library, NJ

A question for myself, why the heck haven't I reviewed this yet? Why, that is a very good question Isabel. My only excuse is laziness, the snowpocalypse, and a crazy amount of school work. Does that work for you? No? Me neither. Why was I just having this argument with myself? Well, because this book ROCKED! I loved The Unbound SO much! The first book was good, but The Unbound blew my expectations out of the water! I loved this book and hope that I take the time to write up a full review soon!

"The Unbound" was even better than the first one! More: character development, mystery and heart-stopping action.
Add to that Schwab's gorgeous writing and you have a WONDERFUL (understatement) sequel.

I'm in love with this series, definitely one of my favorites! What a shame that's not as popular as it should be, it's so freaking well done.

There needs to be a third book. I need more Mac and Wes in my life.

    The 2014 Book to Read!

I received the first book in the series at comicon and liked it enough to check out the sequel. The sequel is even more enjoyable than the original. The characters are further developed and I truly got a sense of who they are as people.

The Unbound picks up slightly after the Archived ended, but it quickly updated on what has been happening. Mackenzie Bishop is clearly traumatized by the events of the first book and is struggling to reconcile the different aspects of her life along with the information her Grandpa gave her on the Archive.

I could not put the book down, it was an exciting adventure to the end. Along with the main character it was hard to tell what was real and what was caused by her trauma. There were twists and turns at every step and I loved the ride.

One the best things about the Archived Series is the sense of reality in the supernatural. I find that the author does an incredible job of making all of her characters real people. Not stereotypes or carbon cutouts. I also truly enjoy the twists that she puts in to every book she writes. The Unbound is an excellent sequel to the Written. I would have to say that I actually liked it a little more. Which I would imagine is because I knew all the characters better and didn’t have to get into them through exposition. I would also have to say that the end of this book was certainly more interesting and unique than the first. I was really going into with no expectation of really knowing what would happen. I voraciously read through the book and if I’d had more time in one sitting to read it; I probably would have finished it in one sitting. I truly love the world and characters that Victoria Schwab has created here. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
