Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In previous episodes, witch, detective, and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has struggled with enemies and sometimes her own scruples. In The Undead Pool, she battles against those who wield an insidious magic that threatens to spawn full-scale war among the races. Adding spice to the proceedings is the seductive presence of that superlatively handsome elf Trent Kalamack. Rapturously applauded in hardcover; now in mass-market paperback and NOOK Book.

Publishers Weekly
01/06/2014
Harrison’s slow but steady 12th and penultimate Hollows novel (following 2012’s Ever After) puts even more pressure on Rachel Morgan, a witch and bounty hunter turned day-walking demon. A series of magical accidents endangers Cincinnati and its undead community. On the personal front Rachel must balance her bodyguard duties for elf drug lord Trent Kalamack, who was once her sworn enemy, with her growing forbidden attraction to him. When Rachel becomes host to the Goddess’s sentient thought-entities, she holds the futures of elves and demons alike in her hands, but at a terrible risk to sanity and existence. The long-running romantic subplot makes substantial progress, with several cinematic action sequences and major world-building revelations interspersed among more intimate scenes. There’s a general sensation of closure and imminent climax as Harrison maneuvers toward the end, and patient readers are promised a substantial payoff. Agent: Richard Curtis, Richard Curtis Associates. (Mar.)

Our heroine, witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan, has kept the demonic ever after from shrinking to puddle size, but can she stop the civil war that's looming? You bet she can. With a 250,000-copy first printing.
Kirkus Reviews
★ 2013-12-08
Love and doom are in the air in this penultimate volume of a popular urban fantasy series (Ever After, 2013, etc.). After so many series installments infused with daywalking demon Rachel Morgan's self-doubt, neuroses and rash behavior, it's nice to see her finally achieve some emotional maturity, expand her circle of trust and seize some happiness for a change. If this novel had a theme song, it would be the Etta James version of "At Last." Readers have been waiting quite a while for Rachel and elf Trent Kalamack to finally admit their feelings for each other and act on them, despite the hereditary enmity of their races and the fact that Trent is engaged to someone else. Fans will relish the moment and will also dig into the rest of the plot, which features Harrison's usual (and usually enjoyable) Evil Conspiracy and labyrinthine plot twists, Rachel rushing to save the day. In this latest crisis, waves of wild magic are flowing from Rachel's ley-line, causing charms to misfire, often with devastating results. The waves are also putting all of Cincinnati's undead vampire masters to sleep, leaving the living vampires to rampage through the city. How have vampires gained control over wild magic, which is the province of the elves? Is Rachel somehow responsible for these incidents, and if not, why do the waves seem to be tracking her? A great ride in and of itself, rather than simply a buildup to the finale, which is sure to be whiz-bang.

Meet the Author

Kim Harrison

New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison was born and raised in the upper Midwest. Her bestselling Hollows novels include Dead Witch Walking; The Good, the Bad, and the Undead; Every Which Way But Dead; A Fistful of Charms; For a Few Demons More; The Outlaw Demon Wails; White Witch, Black Curse; Black Magic Sanction; Pale Demon; A Perfect Blood; Ever After; and The Undead Pool, plus the short-story collection Into the Woods, The Hollows Insider, and the graphic novels Blood Work and Blood Crime. She also writes the Madison Avery series for young adults.

Biography

Bestselling paranormal fantasy author Kim Harrison went all the way through school with nary a thought of becoming a writer. A biology major in college, she took only the required English courses needed to graduate. So when the writing bug hit her later in life, she found herself at a real disadvantage with grammar, spelling, and other basic weapons in the scribbler's arsenal. However, her love of books was her saving grace. Always a voracious reader, Harrison instinctively recognized the role of plot, pacing, and character development in good storytelling. She set about writing with great enthusiasm and plugged away for the better part of decade, until she was able to bring her skills up to par.

Harrison's debut novel grew out of frustration with a growing pile of rejection notices. In an attempt to get publishers' attention, she set out to craft something deliberately weird and edgy. She conceived a motley cast of vampires, werewolves, pixies, and witches, including a sexy bounty hunter named Rachel Morgan, and threw them together in a short story. Then, her agent introduced her to editor Diana Gill, and together they refined and expanded Harrison's idea into a full length novel.

Published in 2004, Dead Witch Walking became a bestseller, launched a blockbuster series, and catapulted Harrison into a pantheon of paranormal superstars that includes Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Christine Feehan, and Sherrilyn Kenyon. As if to validate her inclusion in these ranks, Harrison's stories have also been included in several bestselling paranormal collections.

Good To Know

  • Harrison claims that her muse exists in music. In our exclusive interview, she explained, "Music moves society more than most people realize. In my opinion, it's a soft manipulator of influence and change. I love the power of the musician who composes and performs. I envy their ability to put a nugget of truth in three minutes of sweat and emotional outpouring, colored entirely from their thoughts. And I'll admit that if I can, I'll steal that nugget of truth, study it, facet it, polish it, and place it in my writing."

  • On her MySpace page, Kim lists the following as her heroes: "My parents. Anyone who pursues their dreams when no one believes they can reach them. Single moms and dads."

  • Rachel Morgan and her otherworldly cohorts exist in and around an alternate version of Cincinnati, Ohio -- a "little big city" Harrison was familiar with from her Midwestern youth. She always tries to incorporate "Cincy" sights into her series novels, so readers are likely to find allusions to Eden Park, the Cincinnati Zoo, and other local neighborhoods and landmarks.

  • As a tribute to one of her favorite actor/directors, Harrison has given some of her Rachel Morgan novels titles that play on well-known Clint Eastwood films: For a Few Demons More, Every Which Way but Dead, The Outlaw Demon Wails, etc.

This is the second last book in The Hollow's series and it remains as fast paced as the rest of the books. As we are gearing up for the end some storylines are starting to end and further secrets are being revealed. The main character relationships are still developing and I can not wait to find out how it all comes together.

In this instalment we are introduced to 'Wild Magic' and in turn secrets are revealed about Elf magic and we discover more about their history with the demons. I promised not to divulge anything about the big secrets of this book, just let me say there was squee's, tears and I held my breath more than once to help me through a scene...

      Absolutely loved it!

It finally happened, we've been waiting for 11 books to see if Rachel will ever get together with Trent or maybe kill him or maybe he'd kill her. Well this is the book that it finally happens.

Rachel is trying to stop the demon world from shrinking.

Strange magic bubbles are leaking through the everafter and messing with the magic in the human realm.

The undead vampires have all gone to rest and are not waking up, with all the leaders of the vampires sleeping there general population is running a muck.

And that's just the start of her problems.

Wonderful character developments provide hours of unceasing entertainment. We get interaction from all of Rachel's side kicks, the pack, the demons, the fairies, the vampires, the pixies and the gargoyles. Reading Harrison's The Hollow's Series gives me a feeling of catching up with old friends.

The Undead Pool is another brilliantly addictive story. This non-stop, action packed adventure will have you clinging to every word and still wishing there was more. Completely emotionally invested in this fantasy world can only be attributed to Harrison's vivid and scintillating writing style. Don't miss The Undead Pool, the twelfth book in The Hollow's Series.

I received this AWESOME ARC copy of The Undead Pool from Harper Voyager in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication February 25, 2014.

Hands down AMAZING!  Wow.  So much happened!  Both with storyline and character development.
Second to last in the series, but this was definitely not a "filler" book.  The world of the Hallows is still as
enthralling, as ever.  As a reader, Every emotion possible is brought to life in this book.  I bought it in hard cover and it was worth
every penny.  The final installment is going to be epic....you can just feel it at the conclusion of this book.
Kim Harrison DID NOT DISAPPOINT!  Loved Loved LOVED it!

      Wow. Just wow.

Febraury is my favorite month because I know that a new Hollows book is being launched. And Ms. Harrison, you didn't disappoint! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful family with us. I think this is one of the best so far, though every book in this series is wonderful!

I will hate to see this series end, though I know it will. Just make Elisabeh a brides maid at the wedding.....in a hideous dress with awful shoes...please?

Without a doubt my favorite book in the series. I love the character development and all the surprises along the way. I cannot see how things can be wrapped up in one more book since it feels like a bigger story is just starting. Either way I will be so sad to see this series end!

      Best Book Series Ever!!!

I read over 300 books last year including this series, and now the newest edition "The Undead Pool" I can say hands down this is my favorite book series!! I wish I could find another I haven't read yet that compares! Kim Harrison hits it out of the park! I wish they would make a movie series or Cable TV series so my friends that don't have the time to read can enjoy this story!! Great job Kim! Thank you for creating this incredible world for us to escape into and be apart of!
