Overview

Supernatural superhero Rachel Morgan must counter a strange magic that could spell civil war for the Hollows in this sexy and bewitching urban fantasy adventure in acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison's Hollows series.

Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has managed to save the demonic ever after from shrinking, but at a high cost. Now, strange magic is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong, and the truce between the races, between Inderlander and human, is shattering. Rachel must stop this dark necromancy before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and all-out supernatural war breaks out.

Rachel knows of only weapon to ensure the peace: ancient elven wild magic, which carries its own perils. And no one know better than Rachel that no good deed goes unpunished . . .

Editorial Reviews

In previous episodes, witch, detective, and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has struggled with enemies and sometimes her own scruples. In The Undead Pool, she battles against those who wield an insidious magic that threatens to spawn full-scale war among the races. Adding spice to the proceedings is the seductive presence of that superlatively handsome elf Trent Kalamack. Rapturously applauded in hardcover; now in mass-market paperback and NOOK Book.

Day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has been through a lot in this series set in a Cincinnati where humans and various varieties of inhuman species coexist. In 2013's Ever After, Rachel learned more about the demon realm and got closer to Elf Trent Kalamack. This follow-up delves even deeper into the troubled history of elves and demons. Wild elven magic is loose in Cincinnati, and if Rachel can't find a way to contain it, the resulting chaos will destroy the city. VERDICT Readers who have followed this series will be overjoyed to have Trent and Rachel finally deal with their complicated history and chemistry, but there is a lot of backstory for a new reader to follow. Loose threads are gathered as Harrison prepares to end this series with one final volume, expected in 2015.

Harrison’s slow but steady 12th and penultimate Hollows novel (following 2012’s Ever After) puts even more pressure on Rachel Morgan, a witch and bounty hunter turned day-walking demon. A series of magical accidents endangers Cincinnati and its undead community. On the personal front Rachel must balance her bodyguard duties for elf drug lord Trent Kalamack, who was once her sworn enemy, with her growing forbidden attraction to him. When Rachel becomes host to the Goddess’s sentient thought-entities, she holds the futures of elves and demons alike in her hands, but at a terrible risk to sanity and existence. The long-running romantic subplot makes substantial progress, with several cinematic action sequences and major world-building revelations interspersed among more intimate scenes. There’s a general sensation of closure and imminent climax as Harrison maneuvers toward the end, and patient readers are promised a substantial payoff. Love and doom are in the air in this penultimate volume of a popular urban fantasy series (Ever After, 2013, etc.). After so many series installments infused with daywalking demon Rachel Morgan's self-doubt, neuroses and rash behavior, it's nice to see her finally achieve some emotional maturity, expand her circle of trust and seize some happiness for a change. If this novel had a theme song, it would be the Etta James version of "At Last." Readers have been waiting quite a while for Rachel and elf Trent Kalamack to finally admit their feelings for each other and act on them, despite the hereditary enmity of their races and the fact that Trent is engaged to someone else. Fans will relish the moment and will also dig into the rest of the plot, which features Harrison's usual (and usually enjoyable) Evil Conspiracy and labyrinthine plot twists, Rachel rushing to save the day. In this latest crisis, waves of wild magic are flowing from Rachel's ley-line, causing charms to misfire, often with devastating results. The waves are also putting all of Cincinnati's undead vampire masters to sleep, leaving the living vampires to rampage through the city. How have vampires gained control over wild magic, which is the province of the elves? Is Rachel somehow responsible for these incidents, and if not, why do the waves seem to be tracking her? A great ride in and of itself, rather than simply a buildup to the finale, which is sure to be whiz-bang.

This is the second last book in The Hollow's series and it remains as fast paced as the rest of the books. As we are gearing up for the end some storylines are starting to end and further secrets are being revealed. The main character relationships are still developing and I can not wait to find out how it all comes together. In this instalment we are introduced to 'Wild Magic' and in turn secrets are revealed about Elf magic and we discover more about their history with the demons. I promised not to divulge anything about the big secrets of this book, just let me say there was squee's, tears and I held my breath more than once to help me through a scene... Absolutely loved it!

Rachel Morgan, day-walking demon witch, is at it again. Charms are misfiring all over Cincinnati and all roads lead back to Rachel. Trent Kalamack, Cinci's very own elven hottie is betrothed to Ellasbeth, and Rachel fights the urge to rip his clothes off and claim him for herself. All the master vampires in the city are snoozing and a rebel of free vamps are running rampant. Felix still has his fangs deep into Nina, and Ivy struggles to break his hold. And Jenks, with his larger than life personality, continues to woo readers with his colorful vocabulary. I cannot say too much more for fear that I will be giving away the best part of this book...I will just say that this was what I consider to be the best book yet. I am deeply troubled that we only have one book left to this series and I am eagerly looking forward as to how Ms Harrison is going to tie everything up and keep her readers happy! The author has been trying really hard to show us that Rachel is maturing in the last few books but this is the book where I actually believed it. Throughout this story there was a definite sense of bittersweetness because you can tell that everything's changing and it's a little sad to see that Rachel and her friends are all moving on in different directions. At the same time, they are all still working together and at least they're moving towards their own happy endings.  Another great adventure from Kim Harrison! Very excited for the next (and last) book, but very sad to see Rachel go.

Hands down AMAZING!  Wow.  So much happened!  Both with storyline and character development.   Second to last in the series, but this was definitely not a "filler" book.  The world of the Hallows is still as  enthralling, as ever.  As a reader, Every emotion possible is brought to life in this book.  I bought it in hard cover and it was worth every penny.  The final installment is going to be epic....you can just feel it at the conclusion of this book.   Kim Harrison DID NOT DISAPPOINT!  Loved Loved LOVED it!

Without a doubt my favorite book in the series. I love the character development and all the surprises along the way. I cannot see how things can be wrapped up in one more book since it feels like a bigger story is just starting. Either way I will be so sad to see this series end!

It finally happened, we've been waiting for 11 books to see if Rachel will ever get together with Trent or maybe kill him or maybe he'd kill her. Well this is the book that it finally happens. Rachel is trying to stop the demon world from shrinking.  Strange magic bubbles are leaking through the everafter and messing with the magic in the human realm.  The undead vampires have all gone to rest and are not waking up, with all the leaders of the vampires sleeping there general population is running a muck.  And that's just the start of her problems.  Wonderful character developments provide hours of unceasing entertainment. We get interaction from all of Rachel's side kicks, the pack, the demons, the fairies, the vampires, the pixies and the gargoyles. Reading Harrison's The Hollow's Series gives me a feeling of catching up with old friends. The Undead Pool is another brilliantly addictive story. This non-stop, action packed adventure will have you clinging to every word and still wishing there was more. Completely emotionally invested in this fantasy world can only be attributed to Harrison's vivid and scintillating writing style. Don't miss The Undead Pool, the twelfth book in The Hollow's Series. I received this AWESOME ARC copy of The Undead Pool from Harper Voyager in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication February 25, 2014.

Febraury is my favorite month because I know that a new Hollows book is being launched. And Ms. Harrison, you didn't disappoint! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful family with us. I think this is one of the best so far, though every book in this series is wonderful! I will hate to see this series end, though I know it will. Just make Elisabeh a brides maid at the wedding.....in a hideous dress with awful shoes...please?

I read over 300 books last year including this series, and now the newest edition "The Undead Pool" I can say hands down this is my favorite book series!! I wish I could find another I haven't read yet that compares! Kim Harrison hits it out of the park! I wish they would make a movie series or Cable TV series so my friends that don't have the time to read can enjoy this story!! Great job Kim! Thank you for creating this incredible world for us to escape into and be apart of!

This is a book in the Rachel Morgan or The Hollows series. It needs to be read in order. The first book is Dead Witch Walking.       I thought since the library had this on audio and I hadn't read it and I follow the series, I'd listen to the audio book. This is the second one, I have heard. I still prefer reading the book, but listening to one once in a while is a nice change of pace, and an easy way to catch up on books I want to read.      The only issue I have with this audio book is I thought since the book is told by Rachel Morgan's perspective that it would be just the narrator. Nope, she did character voices. That threw me off for a moment but I eventually let go and got to enjoy the book.      This is the second to last in the series, and it has some major revelations and character growth and changes. This story is the typical action pack, character rich tales in the world of the Hollows.

I have been a big fan since the beginning. But it now reminds me of anita blake vampire hunter. Just gets more and more unbelievable and outlandish. It got so it was like the words were thrown together to add pages to the book. I agree 100% with the other people who stated the the book could have been 200 pages less. I never before read so much useless nonsense in a book. I felt like the words were thrown together and called sentences. I have to really think about buying #13. Especially since as an ebook its $15.00.

This is my very favorite book series. I always enjoy the book. I hate to see the series end but Kim Harrison insures us she has more good books in our future. It is going to be difficult to be as good as this series though.

I was worried for a bit that this would turn out as the last book. I enjoyed the story a lot. Loved that Rachel and Trent finally got something going. I cant wait for next year.

Starting to tie up all the loose ends, while still leaving room for everything to go to the Ever After and back in the last book to come.
