Booklist

Designed for elementary and middle school students, this series offers a unique interactive experience. The student gets a chance to make several choices throughout the book and realize the consequences. For example, the reader can choose to be a young enslaved person and try to escape with his/her father or he/she can choose to stay on the plantation and help his/her mother. Going with the father can lead to getting caught and sold or even dying in the wilderness. But maybe the escape will be successful and lead to freedom. In other scenarios, the reader takes on the role of a slave catcher or an abolitionist who runs a station on the Underground Railroad. This format gives the student a chance to experience what happened to real people during the ear of the Underground Railroad. This is a more interesting way to learn about history than standard textbook approaches. The book concludes with a time line, a bibliography, Internet sites, a glossary, and an index.
