THEN AS I WENT CAME A PLACE THAT WAS STRANGE
TWAS A PLACE NOT DOWN ON THE MAP!

- Carl Sandburg

Despite Carl Sandburgs lament that no road is sure, each of us must travel along our own life path. But too often, we lose sight of our true destination and find ourselves lost in the wildernesstrapped in an unfulfilling job, relationship, or life.

The Undiscovered Country is a simple and elegant photography book that offers inspiration for the soul. It matches the lush photographs of California-based photographer, Gary Hart, with a selection of classic American poetry that celebrates the need for a deep connection to ourselves and our place in the universe.

Harts unique photographic perspective leaps off the page in sparkling color and crisp detail. His images capture the grandeur, simplicity, and pure beauty of the untamed American landscape. The poems add a deeper dimension and help us to get lost in a diamond of a morning (Amy Lowell) . . .the frolic architecture of snow (Ralph Waldo Emerson) . . .the hollow vastness of the sky (William Carlos Williams).

Together, the images and the poems map out the arc of a day, a season, and a lifetime. The journey begins at dawn and wends through spring to dusk and into winter until the sun rises anew, and the traveler must return to the workaday world, spirit refreshed and renewed.

The Undiscovered Country offers a revitalizing retreat from the modern world. It wont solve all your problems, but it may help put them in perspective. And if you happen to find yourself in a strange place not down on the map, remember that, as Walt Whitman joyfully noted, the reason you are here is that the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

You don't often come across a book that combines beauty of image with beauty of language as well as this one does. A real keeper -- the perfect addition to anyone's coffee table, magazine rack, waiting room or what-not. Too pretty to keep on a shelf!
