    A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The author has given the reader an honest look into his experience before, during, and after the Gulf War. This book is a MUST READ especially at a time like now. It is easy for us as Americans, living in the sheltered lives that we do, to forget about the soldiers that are fighting for our freedoms right at this moment. Thank you Steve for your courage and your perspective. You have opened my eyes even wider since the September 11 tragedy.

Not worth the time or the money!!!!!

This was one of the worst books I have read in years! Steve was focused on himself and was very selfish, lazy, and had more problems than a Soap Opera star. This was the worst book I have ever read about any war! Don't even bother with it!

I highly recommend this amazing book!

It¿s not often that I pick up a book about something other than the Vietnam War but I¿m so glad I did. The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy by Steven Manchester is amazing! It¿s not that the war was amazing but rather the way the author has depicted it and perhaps amazing is still not the right word to use. As I opened Chapter One for the first time Steve was talking about being onboard the C-5A Galaxy plane that was taking his National Guard unit off to the Middle East. He wrote candidly of his feelings toward the war and his fellow soldiers. He was open and honest throughout the entire book. This was the first time the American public watched as members of the National Guard and various Reserve units around the United States were being deployed along with their active duty counterpart troops to serve their country. No it¿s not the first time units of that nature were deployed but this time was different. Everything was aired on television and the country quickly became aware of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform were making. Many were leaving spouses, children and jobs behind. In some instances both parents of children were being deployed and their children were being left with grandparents or other family members. Steven¿s group was no different. Many members of his Military Police (MP) Company from Massachusetts were married and had families. Throughout the chapters he reflected on some of them. He spoke of how he and ¿his comrades have come to heal their nation from a ghost that has haunted them for two decades: the poltergeist of Vietnam.¿ He wrote of seeing ¿the after-effects of 41 days of uninterrupted bombing.¿ AND how ¿The Arabian Desert has been used as a testing ground for every new weapon in the American arsenal.¿ He held nothing back including his feelings and emotions. The war itself ended on 28 February 1991 but that¿s when Steve¿s group was really put to work. However, Steve¿s war began earlier when he was first injected with the many shots required of the soldiers before they could deploy. They were already getting ill from those shots and the pills they were forced to swallow frequently that were supposed to protect them from various known nerve agents. Now ¿Steve¿s body is invaded with its own ghost of torment.¿ He and his fellow soldier¿s have been ¿brutally introduced to `The Mystery Illness¿¿ better known to the American public as Persian Gulf Syndrome. His book went onto explain what was done to him, how it effected his relationship with his wife, and what he ultimately did. When his wife became pregnant he worried the whole nine months that he would have passed on his illness to his son. Steve spoke of deciding to change jobs and how he came to realize what would make him feel better. As I said at the beginning this was an amazing book. This is one book that needs to be read in its entirety by everyone. Go through his life with him, journey to a foreign land, and pray for him as he goes. This is truly an inspirational story even though the author has changed the names of the people and units to protect them and wrote it in third person. I highly recommend it.

    An Incredible Journey!!!!!

At the strong suggestion of a friend, I picked up this book...and never put it down! At first, the author poured the foundation with some very real and honorable characters. As the story progressed, to my own surprise, my tears of laughter were replaced with tears of compassion. Throughout this heart-wrenching (and heart-warming) tale, the author painted some very descriptive settings in which the Gulf War was fought. And it seemed that just as I finished the book and wiped my eyes, reality struck: This author didn't just escort me on an exciting adventure that he took ten years ago- he actually taught me to FEEL what he and his comrades endured...and continue to endure. He taught me why it's so important to remember! I think it's time to offer the same support we gave our Gulf War Veterans ten years ago. After reading this book- it is clear that they need it even more now!

    SFC/Ruggie

Truth is often times stranger than fiction, but rarely revealed in a biography. This book is a 'MUST READ' for anyone interested in the Gulf War. The author tells an excellent story about his experiences and those around him.

    Recomended

'The Unexpected Storm' is truly a work of art. It is a story written in many different levels appealing to a very wide audience. Many will love the book for the experience of re-living the Desert Storm, way many will love it for the emotional roller coaster ride of inter personal relationships that it supplies to the readers. The book is a must read! It is a book about humanity and all of life's short comings. It demonstrates the glory of a nation tio the solemnity of a lone soilder. Once I began to read it, I could not put it down. I challenge other readers of this book to disagree with that statement.

A terrific book on the reality of desert storm.

What a terrific read! This book is so much more than the title suggests. It is a heart wrenching look into the inside of the author. Not only do you experience the war through the eyes of this author, but you also experience his triumphs, and more importantly, his human fears. Although he indicates that he is not a hero, but I strongly disagree. For any author to bear his sole in the way Steven Manchester does, it epitomizes a hero. The fact that he wrote the book in the manner and form in which he did, by completely opening his soul for the world to view, he is a true modern day hero. Do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK.

    Must Read!!!

The Unexpected Storm was extraordinarily written. Filled with emotion, this book gives an honest perspective of a citizen soldier serving our country with dignity. The author, Steven Manchester showed how courageous he is by sharing his innermost thoughts and feelings. And he did an outstanding job specifically describing the physical environment in the Gulf region. His ability to help the reader visualize and feel what he experienced is remarkable. Veterans, or not - people of all ages should read this book!

Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy

Finally! Someone gets to the 'heart' of the matter regarding the Persian Gulf War. Brilliant and revealing, it captures the emotions, trials, and lessons learned by those who chose to serve their country during one of the most difficult episodes in american history. Candid and compelling, it will touch you in a way that makes you think. A must read for all those who served or who had loved ones serve in the Gulf War. No longer are their voices unheard. May we all listen.

    Understanding the Storm

Prior to reading The Unexpected Storm, I thought that I understood. We send our soldiers to war with blessings and prayers. We worry about them and try to continually show our support and when they we return, we cry and rejoice, thankful for their safe return and then life returns to normal. But for our soldiers, life is anything but normal. This I learned from Sgt. Steven Manchester who now sees the world through a different set of eyes. He bravely tells the story of a young man who goes to war and returns home only to find that his life now needs to take a different path in order to mean something. He re-orders his priorities and family and friends must learn to accept this new man as he adapts to this new life. But it is not easy, change is never easy and his peace and happiness are at stake. I am writing this review because I want people to read his story. The Unexpected Storm is not just a war story confirming what we have all heard through the media. It is a real story about a real soldier who lives a real life. It is a story that helped me better understand a soldier¿s homecoming, but most importantly, a story that taught me to remember the things that I should hold closest to my heart, the things that will help me to weather life¿s ¿unexpected storms¿. Thank you, Sgt. Manchester, for that gift. Please read his story.

Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy

WOW!! This book touched me like no other could. Not having a clear understanding of the intricacies of war, this book not only enlightened me but made me realize just how much it cost our boys to be there. Watch them grow from lads to men through the eyes of someone who knows and who's lived it. The soul of this author flows through his pen directly to your heart and touches you in ways which might surprise you. Couldnt put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone who never truly understood the Gulf War. Masterfully written and honestly portrayed, it will leave you with a mix of emotions...compassion not the least of them. Bravo!!
