Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The two-volume "Today" series focuses on current conditions and problems in the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union. The format, with its heavy black sans serif type, gaudily colored photos jumbled together with maps, pie charts and sidebars, is eye-catching, though not very elegant. Still, there's quite a bit of information packed into this volume's 21 large double-page spreads, which begin by clarifying differences among the terms United Kingdom, Great Britain, and British Isles. Readers will learn from brief text, framed sidebars, and lists of facts something about Britain's geography, population diversity, and system of government. Two spreads touch on the history of the growing empire and its later decline, with one spread introducing England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the offshore islands; London, as the UK's world city, also gets its own pages. After that, each section discusses achievements and current problems facing the UK in the areas of rural life, transportation, health costs, education, and dwindling resources. More fun is the survey of popular sports and leisure activities, including soccer, football, TV, movies, and visits to museums. Final pages deal with challenges for the future (e.g., relations with the European Union) and offer a timeline of events, a large map (political only), a glossary, and a list of pertinent websites. This book will be especially useful as a quick reference for facts about the UK and as a source for current topics that teens can investigate in more detail. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
